[Story] I used to hate working 5 days, now I love working 7
I've kinda wanted to post my story in here a few times but never quite found the time. I've used this subreddit on and off to find bumps in morale and hope my journey can be of use to those seeking professional success / motivation. Around 4 years ago I graduated college to the worst job market since the Great Depression. I quickly was learning how unrealistic landing that "dream job" I was also told I would get would be. After almost 6 months of hustling job interviews, I received an offer to become the Financial Analyst (and later promoted to Senior Financial Analyst) for one of the most premier casinos / casino companies in Las Vegas / the world. The only problem is I found out that I fucking hated mostly everything about it. During those years working as an analyst, I learned a lot but constantly hated waking up to put on a suit and drive in traffic to make financial reports. "Salary" positions is the first world form of slavery. I worked long-long hours and many weekends with no upside to it. I didn't find most of my work enjoyable and I'm the type of person that only gets results when I care. I started getting into the idea of creating startup companies early on and constantly worked on my own startups with the hopes to leave corporate world behind. Working a full job and trying to be received as a respectable entrepreneur is a difficult task both time-wise and overall quality of work. My first startup with my brother failed after a year, my second one launched but had a bad business model (pageviews), and the third in bitcoin was increasingly becoming another unrealistic goal. In my darkest hours is when my life changed. I felt like I was pretty close to being fired and/or I really had to move on. I am a terrible interviewer too, so finding the next job never seemed like a reality to me. I'd spent pretty much everything on failed attempts to create companies. One night I saw a post on the front page "4chan designs some shirts". They were hilarious shirt mockups and the comment section was filled with "I would buy so many of those", so I decided that night to make a survey to see which shirts people actually wanted. That survey was filled organically thousands of times (which is pretty unheard of) and so I found a local manufacturer, learned about licensing, and pieced together a really crappy website. We launched with over $10k in revenue in the first week. After a month, it became apparent that I needed this to succeed and to take the jump to leave my job. Huge risk. It's been about 6 months now since launch and I've done (previously unannounced):

I wake up and hang out with my dog all day now. I love online communities, so managing this company is so much more fun than either of my failed startups and prior job. It's a ton of work but I never hate it. I realize now that the aspects of corporate that made my life so miserable was: 1. not being allowed to be myself, 2. wearing that goddamn suit every morning. Basically I guess the moral of this story is just how unexpected life's changes for the better can be for you. You just have to be ready to take risks at times and be ready to dedicate yourself when the opportunity arrives. I wouldn't be where I am now if I hadn't failed so many times before. The lessons you learn are extremely valuable and make you appreciate the things you have when life gives you a chance to pursue real happiness. I'm a Programmer Analyst who's been working for a Casino company in Las Vegas for about 14 months. I think the title is a bit of a misnomer however. What I had really gotten was an L2 IT Support Position with very minimal coding and a lot of production level support for our company's products, along with a very brutal week long on-call shift about once a month. I'm making roughly 48K in this position. I was very unsatisfied with the position and pushed myself to create situations in which I could code, such as automating our processes or volunteering to work on bug fixes and quick hit projects. My work was recognized and in the in the past few weeks I've been fielding an offer for a transfer into an L3 Java Development position for our customer relationship management applications. How do I approach salary negotiations given these circumstances? I'm on fairly good terms with one of my co-workers in the L2 space and he disclosed that he makes almost 10K more than me when they hired him a year previously. I kick myself for not bargaining for a higher salary in the first place, so I thought this might be an opportunity to do better. The problem is that I feel like my bargaining chip may be low since I don't have a ton of experience and they can move me laterally without any change in title. Honestly, I might just take the job regardless because it's more in line with what I want to do, but I would like to bargain for a salary closer to 60K or even higher. I'm not really sure what's realistic given the circumstances but I want to make sure I take the right steps and approach this properly!
