Sé que hay muchos nuevos votantes que seguramente nunca han escuchado del candidato, en 2011 explotó un escándalo por corrupción en Casinos que prácticamente sepultó su carrera política, este año sale como cucaracha de entre la basura esperando que la gente ya se haya olvidado de la polémica, en este hilo vamos a repasar su historia y algunos de sus casos de corrupción

¿Quién es?

Nacido en Oaxaca, empresario de la construcción y avecindado en Nuevo León desde los 80, el exalcalde de Monterrey se fortaleció en el interior de Acción Nacional al obtener en 2000 la alcaldía de San Nicolás, quinto municipio más industrializado del país.
Larrazabal se apartó por muchos años y por voluntad propia de los reflectores (a excepción del paréntesis de tres años que fungió como diputado federal) quizá para reflexionar o para evadir el escándalo del llamado "queso-gate", que sacó a la luz pública a su hermano Jonás, y que puso contra las cuerdas a Fernando como a pocos políticos de aquel entonces.

La costosa Biblioteca trunca de Fox que sólo desperdició dinero del erario

Durante el gobierno de Vicente Fox fue responsable de la construcción de la biblioteca “José Vasconcelos”, la obra emblemática del sexenio.
En marzo de 2007, Alberto Kalach, el arquitecto de la biblioteca aseguró que tenía documentadas más de 3 mil observaciones sobre la obra, mismas que había comentado con el comité encabezado con Larrazabal.
La magna obra de Vicente Fox fue construida en medio de una polémica que no terminó con su edificación. La biblioteca costó unos mil 300 millones de pesos, según cifras oficiales; más de dos mil millones de pesos, de acuerdo con el exdiputado federal del Partido de la Revolución Democrática, Alfonso Suárez del Real.
Iniciadas en febrero de 2004 las obras preliminares, el recinto fue inaugurado en mayo de 2006. Menos de un año después, en marzo de 2007, tuvo que ser cerrado durante 20 meses, por fallas en su construcción, incluidas filtraciones de agua.
Reabierta en diciembre de 2008, la presencia de humedad en muros y goteras prevalece. Reportes de prensa de febrero de 2012 indicaron que ésta era atajada incluso con cubetas. Nosotros ya no vimos cubetas. Ese febrero, la directora de la Vasconcelos, Patricia Hernández Salazar, atribuyó el problema a escurrimientos de agua a través de las ventanas debido a lluvias, no a goteras.

Lucrativo negocio inmobiliario usando influencia y prestanombres

Mediante prestanombres de modesta situación económica, Fernando Larrázabal, desde su cargo como alcalde de Monterrey, orquestó entre 2009 y 2012 una operación de beneficio personal con un terreno adquirido por su esposa, y en el que actualmente se encuentra una torre de seis pisos de departamentos.
Un colaborador de campaña convertido en empleado municipal, un trabajador de la industria de la construcción y un dentista de Morelos sirvieron de pantalla al exalcalde Fernando Larrazábal para lograr la construcción irregular del multifamiliar en la colonia Bosques de Satélite, en la capital regiomontana.

Casino Royale

En 2011 un comando, presuntamente del grupo delictivo de Los Zetas, roció gasolina en el interior del Casino Royale de Monterrey y provocó un incendio que dejó 61 personas muertas.
Antes del incendio en el casino, el 4 de mayo de ese mismo año, el sitio había sido clausurado por las autoridades locales porque no tenía los permisos necesarios para ampliar sus instalaciones, pero consiguieron un amparo ante el Tribunal de lo Contencioso Administrativo del Estado.
Aunque el alcalde de Monterrey, Nuevo León, Fernando Larrazabal, asegura que su administración clausuró en mayo pasado el casino Royale, donde murieron 52 personas, la comisión legislativa investigadora del atentado afirma que esto nunca sucedió.
Héctor Gutiérrez de la Garza, presidente de la comisión —integrada por legisladores locales de diferentes partidos políticos y dedicada a investigar irregularidades administrativas del casino—, informó en rueda de prensa que solo fue clausurada una ampliación de la casa de apuestas el pasado 4 de mayo.
“La orden del levantamiento de esta clausura no fue del casino. El casino siempre estuvo abierto”, dijo el también líder de la bancada legislativa del Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) en el Congreso estatal.

Escándalo de mordidas para casinos por parte de su secretario y su hermano Jonás Larrazabal

El 31 de agosto del 2011 los diarios El Norte, de Monterrey, y Reforma, de la Ciudad de México, presentaron un video en el que se ve a un hermano de Fernando Larrazábal recibiendo dinero en un casino. Un moche, aseguró la prensa, se presumió seguramente por permitir la operación irregular del negocio.
Este escándalo daba fuerza a las acusaciones de que el entonces presidente municipal presionaba a los casinos para cerrarlos y su hermano se encarga de cobrar los moches para que permitieran seguir operando.
También se publicó un video en el que aparece el secretario de Desarrollo Humano de Monterrey, Miguel Ángel García, en una presunta negociación con el dueño de una casa de apuestas. García es considerado uno de los hombres de confianza de Fernando Larrazabal.
El alcalde de Monterrey se defendió diciendo que su hermano es un comerciante que vende quesos de Oaxaca a los casinos, ésa fue la explicación que dio para justificar las imágenes donde toma efectivo en mesas de blackjack.
Decenas de manifestantes se congregaron en la Macroplaza de Monterrey para exigir la renuncia del gobernador de Nuevo León, Rodrigo Medina, y del alcalde Fernando Larrazabal.
El juez segundo de lo penal dictó auto de formal prisión en contra de Jonás Larrazabal Bretón por el delito de chantaje, considerado grave y por el que no alcanza libertad bajo fianza. Las pruebas que incriminan al hermano del alcalde panista de Monterrey, Fernando Larrazabal Bretón, son dos llamadas telefónicas que tenía registradas la exesposa de Sergio Gil García, propietario del Casino Red, a quien se le exigieron 1.5 millones de pesos para mantener el establecimiento abierto.
Jonás Larrazábal fue a prisión brevemente y se le exculpó, incluso con el perdón de los dueños del Casino Red, pese a que ese dinero formaba parte de una especie de pago por “derecho de piso”.
Pero luego el Casino Red, ubicado en la avenida San Jerónimo de la capital de Nuevo León, fue clausurado por la autoridad municipal durante cuatro años.
Aun cuando el entonces alcalde pidió licencia y regresó al cargo no recibió castigo alguno por los actos de corrupción.

Otras controversias

Como alcalde de Monterrey clausuró 21 giros negros y se enfrascó en una confrontación con el Tribunal de lo Contencioso, luego de que este órgano amparara al casino Winland y permitiera su reapertura.
Además, Larrazabal Bretón —según refieren versiones periodísticas— es acusado de controlar el PAN estatal junto con Zeferino Salgado, delegado de la Secretaría de Comunicaciones y Transportes, y Raúl Gracia, de la Judicatura estatal.

Conclusiones

El exalcalde Fernando Larrázabal ha usado sus cargos y posición política para enriquecerse ilícitamente desde la administración de Vicente Fox. En el periodo de la presidencia de Calderón sufrió la gran caída de su carrera política al destaparse su esquema de corrupción debido a la desfachatez de su hermano. Esto marcó el fin de sus cargos políticos y lo obligó a tener que mantener un perfil bajo (aún como diputado federal) no sin dejar manipular el Partido Acción Nacional en Nuevo León desde las sombras, el fue el mayor promotor de la campaña de Zeferino Salgado actual alcalde de San Nicolás (de su esquema de corrupción usando al municipio de San Nicolas hablaremos luego).
Ahora salió de su madriguera para tratar de obtener otra vez poder político esperando que estos 9 años se hayan borrado sus atropellos en la conciencia pública.

Fui funcionario público y terminé dándole trabajo a una porquería de persona

Nací en una pequeña ranchería al norte del país cercana al municipio de Zuazua NL, por supuesto en la pobreza, tuve una infancia llena de carencias de todo tipo. Éramos la típica familia de pueblo numerosa, que se va desquebrajando con la inevitable migración a los EU, como decimos acá, a los “yunaited”, me tocó ser el más chico de mi familia, mis hermanos varones al cumplir los 16 todos se fueron yendo de braseros, de algunos no tuvimos noticia en años. Al ser el hermano varón más chico me quedé solo con mis hermanas, con la responsabilidad implícita de quedarme al cuidado de mis hermanas y ser el futuro sustento de mis viejos que, para la época, ya las fuerzas y la salud se les iban depauperando. No me quedó de otra que hacer lazos fraternales con los primos, de entre todos, entablé especial relación con el primo chistoso, ese vato siempre andaba jugándole bromas a la gente del pueblo, nos conocían como viruta y capulina, porque mi primo era gordo y yo muy flaco, de él aprendí a ser una persona extrovertida y dicharachera, empecé a agarrarle al gusto a tomar la palabra y hablar. Conforme fuimos creciendo, siempre éramos los primos invitados a las fiestas, porque juntos armábamos el cotorreo, alegrábamos a la gente con nuestras bromas, historias y anécdotas de la infancia que eran muchas, y que conforme pasaba el tiempo, le íbamos agregando detalles, muchas veces ciertos, muchas veces inventados como para ponerles más dramatismo, porque como dice el dicho: “Chingue a su madre el que no le aumente”.
Conforme pasaron los años, la ranchería fue creciendo, lentamente, pero crecía. Dejamos de ser niños, y comenzaron las responsabilidades, yo tuve que ayudarle cada vez más a mi viejo padre con el pequeño rancho y los pocos animales que teníamos, no me quedó de otra, tuve que dejar la preparatoria, mis sueño era llegar a ser licenciado, por aquellos tiempos, no usábamos el término “abogado”, eras licenciado, y eso ya te aseguraba ser alguien exitoso, soñaba con que un día me dijeran -Buenas tardes Licenciado, ¿Cómo está usted señor Licenciado?-. Llegaron las novias, y con ello las ganas de tener algo más, pero no podía irme a Monterrey a estudiar una carrera, o irme a los EU y dejar a mis padres y hermanas. Por la falta de oportunidades en el pueblo, mi primo decidió fugarse con la novia y mudarse a Monterrey donde supuestamente ya tenía un trabajo asegurado en una fábrica de hielo, a pesar de que casi me convence de irme con él a Monterrey, no pude dejar a mis padres, no tuve la fuerza. Me quedé solo.
Cumplí 35 años, casado, 3 hijos, hacía 10 que había enterrado a mi padre. Con mucho trabajo y un poco de suerte, y gracias a que al quedarme solo sin mi primo, yo tomé su lugar y fui lo que podría decir, el alma del pueblo, era amigo de prácticamente todo el pueblo, todos me conocían, y nunca faltaba quien me frecuentara para platicar, bromear, eso me abrió la puerta para relacionarme y ganarme la confianza de la gente, podría decir que fueron años muy buenos, aunque no era rico, vivía muy a gusto, podría decir que estaba agusto con lo que tenía y con lo que pasaba, hasta podría decir que era feliz.
No duró mucho, un día cayó una inhóspita helada, perdimos todas las cosechas, murieron casi todos los animales, me quedé otra vez sin nada, perdido, sin esperanzas, con una esposa, 3 hijos, y una madre vieja y enferma. Harto y desesperado por la situación fui a buscar el regidor del pueblo en busca de apoyo, crédito, trabajo, lo que fuera, no encontré nada de eso. El regidor al verme desesperado me invitó a comer a la cantina del pueblo, en sus palabras no encontré aliento, esperanza, ni mucho menos el trabajo o dinero que tanto necesitaba, pero si me di cuenta de algo, algo que cambió el rumbo de mi vida, me di cuenta que no se necesitaba mucho para tener un cargo en el municipio como funcionario, tan solo se necesitaba algo de popularidad y la simpatía de los habitantes del pueblo, dos cosas que yo ya tenía. Se aproximaban las elecciones para alcalde del pueblo.
En pocos días serían los XV de una de las hijas del cacique del pueblo con quien yo llevaba mucha amistad y relación, sabía que la fiesta iba a ser en grande. Le llamé a mi primo de Monterrey, que para entonces después de la fábrica de hielo y mucho otros empleos, junto con su esposa se dedicaron a organizar todo tipo de fiestas y eventos, en donde además, si el evento lo requería, él fungía como payaso, tenía el talento natural. Le hablé de la fiesta de los XV años y de mis intenciones de lanzarme como candidato, la fiesta para mi, era el foro perfecto para destapar mi candidatura, sabía que don “Cacique”, había contratado camarógrafo, carroza, el casino grande del pueblo. Le propuse a don Cacique contratar los servicios de mi primo con un excelente descuento en el precio con la condición que me prestara a su camarógrafo y me dejara hacer un video para promocionarme, aceptó sin preguntar, era la oportunidad perfecta.
Tres horas antes de la fiesta, ya estábamos listos con el camarógrafo, dos días antes escribí y preparé un discurso de una cuartilla que a mi me pareció muy adecuado. Aunque sabía hablar y relacionarme con la gente, al verme frente a una cámara me quedé tieso, sudaba, las manos tiesas en la cintura, mi primo se cagaba de risa. Entre la gente que trabajaba con mi primo, iba un muchacho joven, estudiante, de entre unos 20 a 21 años de edad, se me quedaba viendo muy serio, como con ganas de decirme algo, de corregirme, pero no se animaba, yo desesperado sabiendo que la cosa iba mal y que ya nos quedaba muy poco tiempo antes de que empezara la fiesta, le dije -a ver tú muchacho: ¿cómo se te hace esto?- Entre dubitativo, comenzó a hablar de esto, aquello, poco a poco fue agarrando confianza y empezó a darme consejos, agarró mi discurso, que yo ya había repetido varías veces, le quitó muchas cosas haciéndolo más corto, me señaló la posición de mis manos, que yo ni siquiera había notado que las tenía tiesas en la cintura, le pregunté si había estudiado para hacer videos o que onda?, entre los risas de todos, me contestó que no, pero que si sabía moverle, -estos muchachitos siempre le saben a eso de las computadoras- pensé. Reconocí que el muchacho tenía un talento, aún no estaba seguro para qué, pero algo tenía ese muchacho. Le propuse que me ayudara con la edición del video, dadas mis circunstancias no podía pagarle, pero le dije: -Mira muchacho, no puedo pagarte, porque como verás, todo esto es prestado, no tengo dinero, pero si ganó, muchacho, ya verás que buscaré en donde acomodarte, conmigo tendrás un trabajo seguro-. Por supuesto no me creyó, me hizo el gesto de: -aah siimón-, mi primo notó su reacción y como era su patrón le dijo: Ayúdale wey, no seas mamón. Aceptó más por la presión de mi primo, que por mi promesa de conseguirle un trabajo.
Gané la elección, como todo nuevo funcionario, tenía muchas ideas, muchas propuestas de mejora para el pueblo que parecía que todo iba a cambiar, la gente estaba conmigo, también ilusionada, sabían que podían confiar en mi, que no los iba a robar como todos, que nos los iba a defraudar, mi primera acción: revisar las arcas y los presupuestos del pueblo, mi primera decepción. Mi sueldo si bien no sería la gran cosa, me permitiría salir del hoyo económico en el que estaba, significaría también asegurar poderle darle la atención médica a mi madre en Monterrey, y así sin querer, sin siquiera darme cuenta, ese fue el comienzo de los abusos de confianza y de poder que con el tiempo fueron el denominador de mi gestión.

No es mi problema

Recordando pude encontrar un titulo afín a ésta anécdota. Enero o febrero, no sé; pero te puedo asegurar que se trataba de un día muy frio, y un servidor bastante frito en todos los aspectos. Aún borracho, salí en la mañana para dirigirme a otro lugar donde quedarme. Estando en Guadalupe, limitando con Juarez caminé a la estación donde conecta la ruta con el metro. Caminé cuarenta minutos entre respiros irregulares, la nariz roja y los pies mojados por el agua helada, misma que se colaba por el cuero de mis tenis. Mientras pensaba con quien podría pasar el rato, a sabiendas que no tendría ni un peso, ni nada que ofrecer más que mi tiempo y mi cuerpo. Odiaba sentirme patético ante mis amigos, conocidos y familiares. Aunque siempre sabía que después de situaciones de ese tipo, llega un punto en donde no se puede caer más, y buscas de nuevo la estabilidad emocional. Un trabajo, escuela , escribir, lo que fuera. Y luego, apenas encontrándola recaer de nuevo en la enfermedad y la miseria. Un circulo sin salida, del cual ya me había habituado desde hace años. Podría darme una vuelta al casino donde solía trabajar, si tengo suerte estará ahí la hostess que acostumbraba saludarme con un abrazo, y un beso húmedo. Bella; de ascendencia inca, cabello castaño, y unos cuantos mechones platinados pero con cuerpo de veinteañera . Quise suspirar, cosa que no pude hacer por la congestión. Imaginaba mi pasado, tomando sus manos y ella respondiendo con sus dedos entrelazando los míos. Era su ''novio'', Liz bromeaba con sus compañeras abrazándome. Yo respondiendo a su cariño, malinterpretando la confianza, como todo hombre. Siempre optaba por nunca averiguar su intención, ni la de ninguna mujer. Una visión idealista del amor nunca funciona, al menos no funcionó mi. El dolor, el rechazo te obliga a ver la realidad como tal. Liz casi tenía la edad de mi madre, y dos hijos. Ahora no sonaba mala idea un romance e incluso algo más serio. Llegaría con el pretexto de cobrar mis doscientos pesos de liquidación, y me toparía con ella. No con la tatuada, ni con la host del novio posesivo. A ella le tocaría el turno de mañana, sea entrando o saliendo, es igual. Pero allí estaría. Conversando, compartiendo unas papas con carne, acomodándome el cuello de la chaqueta, y tocando un rostro frio y enrojecido, sintiendo sus largas uñas descansar sobre mi piel cicatrizada. Trataría de convencerla de dejarme pasar una noche, sin parecer que llevo varios días viviendo entre calles, la central y el parque alamey. Había tenido la fortuna de dormir los últimos días bajo techo, y me sentía con suerte. Como dije, la realidad no tardó en traicionarme estando a unos pasos de mi ex trabajo. ¿Y ahora que? Tendría que hacer todo el papeleo, para que me suelten la feria. Si no esta Liz tendría que esperar varias horas hasta tarde. Suponiendo que logro convencerla, y me la paso en su casa. ¿Que me esperaría ahí? Una chica adolescente mirándome, torciendo la boca y preguntando a su madre quien soy. Un niño diciéndome ''señor'', mirando hacia arriba con su juguete en la mano. Tal vez estaría durmiendo junto a Liz en su sofá abrazándome, después de jugar un poco con su hijo. El señor de la casa llegaría esperando la cena, y al encontrarme me echaría a patadas sin siquiera haber tenido contacto sexual con ella por la apatía. O peor aún. Me presentaría con su esposo, y el me saludaría amistosamente porque es inteligente y sabe que no soy nada para ella. Desistí, y me volví de nuevo a la avenida. Tengo otro amigo viviendo cerca, a casi una hora caminando de donde me encontraba. Tiene televisión por cable, y probablemente tenga cerveza. Al recordar que su casa era un congelador, decidí darle una sorpresa a la familia probablemente se acercaba el cumpleaños de alguien y habría reunión. A duras penas completaba el pasaje de la ruta y el metro. Sabía que llegando al centro de Monterrey, caminaría otra hora para llegar con ellos. Comida, agua caliente, una cerveza y un techo hasta que mejore el clima, y de ahí no sé. Solo me tragaría las preguntas de siempre ¿Como has estado?, ¿Sigues trabajando?, ¿Y la escuela? Después recibiría con mucho aprecio la cortesía casi obligada que me ofrece la amorosa familia. Entré a la estación del transmetro, dirigiéndome a donde tenía que echar las monedas y las eché. Las escuché caer hasta el fondo del tragamonedas, mientras el ruido me aturdía. Apenas traté de atravesar el frio torniquete, y sentí un duro golpe que me sacó el aire. Este ni siquiera se movió, lo empujé otra vez y se acercó el guardia de seguridad. Un sujeto agradable. -Disculpe señor, me puede ayudar, es que no puedo pasar. -No puedes entrar así-dijo-al verme perdiendo el equilibrio-. -¿Así como?-dije-no le estoy faltando el respeto a nadie, mucho menos la ando cagando, solo quiero irme a mi casa. -Mírate como andas, mejor agarra un camión. Nadie se puede subir en estado de ebriedad, le pido de favor que se retire, si no me veré obligado a hablarle a la patrulla. Al menos fue cortés, y lo hubiera hecho de no tener la necesidad. -Compa, el torniquete se tragó lo que me quedaba de efectivo ¿Como voy a regresar entonces? Tíreme paro se lo suplico. -Ese no es mi problema, le pido de favor que se retire. Enfurecí. -No me voy a ir hasta recuperar mis monedas. -Entonces voy a hablarle a la patrulla. Sacó su radio. -Usted es el que me está robando. No respondió, estaba preparando mi puño pero vi su otra mano en la cintura sosteniendo un gas pimienta. Me preguntaba si los entrenaban para ese tipo de situaciones, y quien llegaría primero. Si fallaba me iría igual a transito con los ojos maltrechos, dejando ileso al hijo de su puta madre. Apenas le di la espalda con resignación, y vi la silla de carta blanca, atada con un alambre que usaba de asiento. Un modesto teléfono, conectado al toma corriente descansaba ahí. Caminé hacia la silla y le di una patada con todas mis fuerzas. Vi el teléfono, y la silla volar escasos metros, ni me molesté en ver donde cayeron. Crucé la avenida riendo mostrandole los dientes chuecos al guardia. El se limitó a mirarme con el ceño fruncido vociferando en su radio. Caminé rumbo a la siguiente estación, y me salté el torniquete. Definitivamente seguía con suerte.

De esas raras veces que amanecí con una resaca ligera, sin nauseas. Las cosas nunca mejoran, la nostalgia hace mella en las tripas, en el espíritu, y te engaña. Una bonita forma de aceptar la resignación. Viendo el pasado como una mejor época, sin darte cuenta que en esa misma decías que era la misma mierda de ahora, y poco a poco vas glorificando tus malos días con pequeños detalles. No pude quejarme, la pasé bien anoche. Primera paga, un jale temporal, y un par de gramos de pase. Me lavé la cara, los dientes, usando solo una gota de pasta dental para no estropear el gusto, pensaba tomar un café para paliar un poco la depresión. Hice unas cuantas gárgaras cabeza arriba, y con la garganta aun adormecida escupí una espuma roja como flor de jamaica. Acostumbraba siempre a cepillarme con violencia, y más si no recordaba nada de lo que hice la noche anterior. Arribé a un pequeño centro comercial que abrió hace poco acá en Garza Sada. De arquitectura sofisticada e iluminado con luz natural. Había un HEB, y al lado una cafetería de la misma tienda. Casi en frente un Sally Beauty, y a través del cristal sus vendedoras. Una, delgada y bonita. La otra, regordeta pero también bonita. La tercera no la vi, atendía a una madre, de esas que salen en la sección de sociales en el periódico. Ambas bonitas. En fin. Me dirigí a comprar un café, metí las manos en todos los bolsillos de mis jeans sucios. Veintitrés pesos decía la carta arriba de la caja, y en mi mano seis, y dos vellos púbicos. El bajón me hizo olvidar como iba a sobrevivir los siguientes días. Solo quería un café, y gastar las horas viendo la gente pasar, y esperar a que baje el sol. Quien sabe como le hice para desaparecer todo. Ni me esmeré en buscar culpables. Daba igual si fueron los municipales, algún jotillo o la mujer dañada a la cual le estaba invitando. No andaba tan pedo, ya que siempre acostumbro, a utilizar mucha coca y poco alcohol. Recurriendo al ultimo para bajar la ansiedad y los nervios. Nunca le encuentro sentido a quienes esnifan puntos para bajar la borrachera, o para quitar el hambre, o para permanecer despiertos. Muy común en usuarios comunes. No sirve para ninguna de esas cosas, y lo he comprobado. Me gustaba la adrenalina, la lucidez y la cara adormecida. Tan simple como la vida. Así como yo, el único sospechoso y culpable de mis pendejadas. Aunque seguía apostando, que fue algún gracioso, cuya intención era drogar a la borracha con la que andaba compartiendo fluidos, no con besos. Bueno si, pero no era ella sino la botella en la que estábamos bebiendo. Debieron de ser verdes o rivotriles.
Fingía esperar a alguien en una banca frente al área de cajas. De vez en vez, miraba a las mesas para ver quien era el primero en acabar su taza vespertina. El turno le tocó a dos rucos, bien vestidos y serios. El de anteojos, y con sobrepeso enrollaba los planos, el otro apagaba su laptop. ¿Ingenieros? ¿Arquitectos? ¿Accionistas? El gesto severo les hacía ver importantes, para mi lo eran. Ya que ansiaba el vasito de cartón, con la etiqueta pegada del refill de todo el día de hoy, que justo se encontraba en la cima del contenedor. Tomé el vaso, mirando furtivamente hacia todos lados. Era tan malo como robar, y tenían razón. El café de veintitrés, costó millones de inversión para que estuviese ahí. Ganancias y perdidas diarias. Acciones subiendo y bajando. Horas de estrés y desvelo. El dejar de ser un ser humano pensante, para convertirte en ese monstruo que llaman empresario o emprendedor. Hasta la basura debía ser capitalizada para un plan de emergencia, en caso de liquidación. La seguridad privada se encargaba de eso. De vigilar, y repeler cualquier amenaza. Limosneros, perpenadores, vendedores ambulantes, músicos callejeros, competencia. Todos peligrosos. La élite y su deber de dividir a la población, con la filosofía barata del éxito, del amor propio. Los pobres, felices con la ilusión de tener millones,competir y sobresalir, y su mentalidad millonaria. Los ricos, más astutos que inteligentes. Expertos en la avaricia, la ciencia que llaman economía. Los millones no valen nada cuando tienes todo el mercado, eso no se lo dicen al resto. Mas bien no es necesario, si se tiene todo bajo control. Y eso lo ves en las universidades, donde sus egresados son adoctrinados para pelear en el mundo empresarial, y no para progresar intelectualmente. Praxeología, la ley del más fuerte. Puto neoliberalismo. Pero quien soy yo para decir, escribir, y dar opiniones. Soy un adicto, una persona inmoral y desechable. Un ignorante. Sabía que estaba pensando con la voz, al ver miradas. Los ignoré, y vi como se dejaba caer, el delicioso chorro humeante que salía de uno de los termos cilíndricos. Café de chiapas, decía la leyenda. Sin crema, ni azúcar dije yo. Mi plan era quedarme hasta que alguno de los de seguridad me corriera. No pasó. Había recogido también una orilla de pizza. Era deliciosa, a pesar de los mordiscos y de haber venido de la basura. La salsa de tomate, discreta, en la marca dentada del pan le daba un toque dulzón. Estupendo con el café, casi gourmet. Observé, mientras bebía y rellenaba. Familias, parejas, estudiantes, hombres, mujeres. Toda una amalgama de personas. Siendo normales. Y felices. Las mismas preguntas de siempre. ¿Que hice mal? ¿Por qué no soy como ellos? Hace muchos años, encontré las respuestas. Pensar mucho, pero en nada realmente. Y pues, bastantes veces tuve la oportunidad. Con AA, NA, la iglesia católica, cristiana, la carrera y una mujer que trató de enderezarme, por mero capricho. ¿Inseguridad? Es lo que diría un ordinario. Mejor no saberlo. Me negaba a cavar mi propia tumba. A ser uno más. Moriría pudriéndome en el asfalto, por un pequeño sorbo de libertad, y una cucharada de la dulce miel de las artes. Nada menos. Las cajeras fijaron su atención, hablándose al oído. A veces movía los labios mientras pensaba. Hora de irme. Di unas vueltas más por el mall, con dos tipos siguiéndome. Justo a unos pasos de la escalera eléctrica. Llegaron jóvenes, vistiendo chalecos verdes. Limpios, impecables y sonrientes. Hablaban con la gente. No me preocupé, aprendí a vestirme bien para ahuyentar a vendedores y demás. No funcionó con ellos. No recuerdo como se llamaba. Creo que Alejandra. Las puntas del cabello, color fantasía, y unas manos clarificadas, y suaves; muy suaves. Me saludó, y le extendí mi mano áspera, por los químicos abrasivos que usaba en el jale. -Deja te explico quienes somos, supongo que has oído hablar de nosotros. Me contó sobre los logros. Y las nuevas problemáticas ambientales en el ártico. Lo lograron con Obama, ahora seguía Trump. Si viviera en alguna península, estaría realmente jodido. -¿Que piensas sobre que está pasando?-dijo enseñando unas fotos-la fauna está muriendo, mira como los osos polares mueren sobre trozos de hielo. -Sabía un poco, pero jamas vi a un oso en los huesos casi expuestos. La foto me perturbó bastante. Quería firmar, tenía también el presentimiento de que quería algo más. Por algo andaban merodeando en un lugar, de arquitectura sustentable. Y con la estética de mascotas, buscaban donadores y voluntarios. Me preguntaba si sabían sobre los horrores que vivían los activistas de pueblos originarios. Falsos. Bueno no. Solo estaba dividido con la clase media. Ya no tengo la edad, como para ansiar venganza de clases, son como yo, y yo como ellos. Pero no podía ayudarlos, estaba quebrado y me daba vergüenza decirlo, en especial a una mujer que me atraía. -Ayudas mucho con el simple hecho de que te interese-dijo- se ve que te importa bastante salvar el planeta. En otra vida lo hubiera hecho. Lo hice años atrás. Con los activistas alcohólicos, radicales, rompiendo vitrinas y pintarrajeando tiendas de mascotas. La chica se acercaba más y más. Discretamente daba pasos hacia atrás, y me seguía. No porque quisiese abandonarle. Disfrutaba jocosamente la verborrea. Su aliento cálido, agradable. Mientras yo apestaba a sudor, vistiendo la misma ropa de hace ocho años, no quería que me oliera. Tal vez lo sabía, y no le importaba. -Lo siento amiga, no traje mi tarjeta de nomina-dije-si quieres hago la firma en la pagina web. No me sentí con ganas de hablar, dejando correr otra oportunidad. No lo creo. Aun así estaba seguro de que me porté como un idiota.

Hello everyone! Figured we would keep a running list of the upcoming shows with times and the opening act since that seems to be a common question! The times should all be the local time. Please let me know any corrections. I will keep this updated with new dates and announcements!
Also figured I'd add a basic "schedule for the show" day since that seems to be a common question as well.

This year was my second trip to Drew Estate Cigar Safari with Cigar Federation. The trip this year had a lot more meaning since SmokinLogan was able to raise $10,000 to help Techo and build 5 houses for poor families in Nicaragua.
The trip started in Managua where me nakieninja, realmadmonkey, and shadowbates met up and exchanged cigars and started boozing up. When the booze was done we walked over to the casino and shadowbates bought 10 shots of Flor de Cana but two of the guys didn't drink so me Shad and Tripp were left to take down the rest of the shots. I played some Nicaragua slots for 10 Cordoba (28 Cordoba = $1) and was up to 100 Cordoba before the machine won and took my money. The other guys played roulette but I think only one guy won anything.
The next day the bus arrived and took us past downtown Managua and we drove by the unknown soldier and this year I was finally able to grab a picture of him since I knew we'd be passing by. We then went to a great steakhouse for lunch and were well-fed for our three hour trip to Esteli in the mountains. It was the calm before the storm but the next few days were going to be spent on hard labor.
The next day the bus came and took us to the Oscar Gamez neighborhood in Esteli. Oscar Gamez is home to some of the poorest people in Nicaragua some of these people do not even earn a dollar a day. We met up with the TECHO volunteers and I was handed two giant dirt breaker poles and we walked a few blocks to an old lady's home. The shack was made of wooden planks that were dried out and they had a metal sheet roof. In the small house were six beds on a dirt floor and barely any room. twistedcircuits99 and me watched the volunteers as they measured and they gave us those poles to start digging holes through rock. We had to put posts in and eventually had to crawl down to haul dirt out of the holes we dug. This process was tedious but eventually we laid down the posts. The other teams were not so lucky and had way more rocks in their yard or way deeper holes to dig. Lacking proper digging equipment seemed to rile up most everybody but we had no choice but to use the tools they gave us.
Eventually we built these folks a house and while it was a small place by American standards, for these people it gave them a wooden floor new walls. The old lady thanked us for our work and cried when we gave her the new keys. It was a touching moment but went to demonstrate how small things can mean a lot to people. Despite having nothing (not even a bathroom) the family always tried to give us coffee, juice, and snacks. They worked hard to help build the house and it meant a lot to be able to help them even though the work was torture and the primitive tools took a toll on all of our morale.
After two days of labor, we were given a free day and SmokinLogan dialed in favors and got us tours at Black Label Trading Company, RoMa Craft and La Zona where Espinosa Cigars are made.
I know I liked Black Label Trading Company from the start. James Brown the master blender was smoking a lancero and ran a very clean and organized factory. There weren't many rollers but the operation was very mom and pop and they had their son playing in the offices and their dog chillin' with us visitors. The aging room was great and we were able to pick up some things to try. They gave us an NKB and I was impressed. I was sad they did not have any lanceros for sale but then they dug up some Last Rits lanceros for me!!! I smoked one at lunch and had a lot of respect for the company because I had heard of their cigars before and never gave them a shot because I didn't know much about them (they started in 2014), but after smoking their cigars I am a believer.
Next, Skip Martin gave us a personal tour of El Nica Sueno. Having met Skip not long ago I knew he was good at shooting the breeze and talking about all of his food and beer pics. On this trip, he showed his business side which was a detailed rundown of how tobacco goes in and out of his factory and using lean principles to keep the factory well run and efficient which in turns makes for more affordable cigars. I was surprised to learn that they don't have sales reps which definitely keeps prices low! The other thing I learned at Nica Sueno is that there is only one pair who roll lanceros and they only do it once a year. Having never seen a lancero rolled, Skip had one of his rollers roll using a newpaper technique. Skip gave us La Campanas and Wanderlust to try. All in all for a small shop, El Nica Sueno produces over a million cigars a year and I was very impressed with Skip's detailed tour.
At La Zona we found a lot of cigars, they were making cigars for so many different companies and it was overwhelming. Lots of workers and lots of tobacco everywhere. By this point in the day the heat and exhaustion and aching got to us. Three factory tours in one day is a a lot and you see that in the smaller factories the process is somewhat the same. Tobacco comes in, it is sorted, sometimes fermented, then it is sorted then bunched then rolled the pressed, then it goes through QA, if it makes it past QA then it goes to the aging room then the packaging room. The analogy everyone seems to use is that we all make spaghetti but that everyone does it in their own style.
The next day the Drew Estate Cigar Safari was well under way. We made it to the Oliva family tobacco farm (not to be confused with the Miami Olivas) and were shown seeds and a fermenting barn. Later, we got to go to the fields. I really enjoyed the trip this time as last year's trip we didn't get to see any plants because they had all been harvested. The fields were plentiful and it was really cool to see a full blown plant in bloom then see other plants being grown in the shade for wrapper. The shade plants were smooth and silk and it was a sight to see. Next we went to a curing barn and learned how the leaves are stacked up and that charcoal is burned periodically to help dry out the leaves. It is damp and cool in these barns but there is plenty of circulation.
The surprise they added to Cigar Safari was to take us to a very historical rock. For those of you who don't know, each city in Nicaragua was allowed to pick their own symbol. For Esteli, they chose a painting of a shaman which is known as El Brujito. It is the symbol of Esteli and was carved in a rock high in the mountains long ago. If you notice this El Brujito is also on the Nica Rustica cigar art.
In the afternoon, we got to visit Nicaragua's oldest cigar factory, Joya de Nicaragua. This tour is always impressive since there are about 300 rollers in the factory but even here they only roll lanceros periodically throughout the year, much to my chagrin. I do like the Joya tour since they are very well organized and enjoy asking and answering questions to keep you engaged. Here is a picture from their sorting room where cigars are sorted by color. At Joya we also got to blend cigars. I went with an Ecuador Habano wrapper with a Mexican San Andres binder and ASP Ligero, Jalapa Viso and Condega Seco. We'll see how this turns out in a few months.
When we got back for dinner, Robert Caldwell was hanging out at the factory and SmokinLogan and avrus went upstairs to start Cigar Chat. I eventually hopped over to watch and so did Willy Herrera and Robert Caldwell. Since it was nakieninja's birthday, all of a sudden a cake was brought in and a Mariachi band rolled in while the show was live on air. Kind of surreal but they even broke out a pinata to smash that was full of candy. I think if they filled it with cigars it would have been way crazier!!!
The next day we headed to Drew Estate Factory II and started off in the bale warehouse this thing has literally millions of tobacco in it and it goes very high and very long. There are three years of tobacco production housed here and they take care to freeze the tobacco but also fumigate every month to make sure NO BEETLES. In the fermentation room we got to see the same tobacco aged for different periods of time and smell dat ammonia that was very pungent on the nostrils. Workers wore masks and were setting up new pilons for tobacco fermentation. Before lunch we stopped at Subculture Studios which produces all of Drew Estate's art. I always love that they always keep a piece of home in their studio as an homage to their great friends in Chicago. While in the studio I got a glimpse of some goats they were working on! twistedcircuits99 and OhSoHoppy ponied up for a tattoo and at lunch it was my idea for folks to pool up to give nakieninja a tattoo for his birthday! As you can see OhSoHoppy came back with the baddest ass tattoo that took like 4-6 hours.
Later in the afternoon we were off to Drew Estate I. Most employees take the company shuttle bus to work but a good many also bike to work. On the rolling floor it is an incredible blast of noise from rolling, pressing, bunching, and a loud clamor every inch of the floor. Music plays in the background and people are constantly in motion. I found the one girl who rolls lanceros, it was an honor to see her as she is the only one rolling L40's! Drew Estate makes 120,000 cigars a day so there are so many rollers and production is up 20% from last year if I recall correctly. While in the aging room I noticed these TAAs that Willy Herrera was mentioning about dinner but I didn't want to post anything til they made the announcement!
Eventually JD showed up and was very gracious and thankful we were there. He announced the new collaboration with Robert Caldwell and Willy Herrera called All Out Kings. It was kind of nuts being the first of the general public to learn about it on Cigar Safari. Caldwell and Willy both were enthusiastic on the new collaboration but no work had yet been done so we'll have to see what they come up with. Right after the announcement SmokinLogan and avrus were right on it making a new video for the announcement.
As the day wound down and the evening came, the last day of Cigar Safari was upon us. Our Joya de Nicaragua blends came back to us and the Drew Estate blends were fresh and ready to go. Art from Subculture Studios came back to us and it really was the beginning of the end of a great trip. All in all I think Cigar Safari is my favorite time of the year not only because I get to smoke and drink all week with SmokinLogan, avrus, realmadmonkey, OhSoHoppy, twistedcircuits99, shadowbates, and nakieninja but because you get to appreciate all the hard work that goes into growing and fermenting and rolling tobacco. There really are so many steps it takes and so many hands that go into making one cigar and it always puts things into perspective. I am glad I am back and I want to thank SmokinLogan for setting up the trip and tours and Drew Estate for being such phenomenal hosts. If you enjoy Drew Estate Cigars, I highly recommend this trip you will learn a lot about tobacco.

2016 SUMMER STREET CIRCUIT CONTEST ROUND 10: The Finale

The penultimate round of the 2016 Summer Street Circuit Contest is over, and it's time for the final round.
Last week, we traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, former home of an IndyCar race at Fundidora Park.
10 designers participated. Let's see how they did.
For the first time this season, we've had a tie for the win. PM_ME_UR_ALLIGATOR took his second win ever, with his first being at the 2015 Winter Greater Noida round. MBKF1 took his first win ever. They both originally received 9 votes, but because of the bonus, they both receive 11 points.
Second place went to lui5mb with 7 points. His streak of winning every second round has been ended.
Third place was a tie on 6 points between tininsteelian-2, ARandomPerson17 and viinster88.
Fourth place went to 3d_orz with 3 points.
Fifth place was a tie on 2 points between Alo_14 and knoxvox.
Sixth place went to AresWalker with 1 point.
Everyone received at least one vote this week, so everyone scores a point this week!

lui5mb, despite only finishing 2nd in Monterrey, actually EXTENDS his championship lead over the designer in second by one point.
tininsteelian-2 is still in second, but he is now 32 points behind lui5mb. We can safely assume that it would be impossible for the championship gap to be closed, but it's not over till it's over.
PM_ME_UR_ALLIGATOR is still in third in the championship, but due to his win in Monterrey he's only 1 point behind tininsteelian-2 in second.
Despite a mediocre performance in Monterrey, 3d_orz actually jumps up a spot from 5th to 4th.
ARandomPerson17 moves up from 6th to 5th this week due to pjlee98's absence.
The biggest championship jump of the week comes from MBKF1, who jumps from 17th to 9th in the standings after winning in Monterrey.
Hampster3 is still in last in the championship.
Now, onto this week's round.
Last week, we traveled to the Mexican metropolis of Monterrey. This week, we travel... somewhere else.
The first half of this season was exclusively in IndyCar's main home of the United States. Starting with round 6, we left the United States and travelled to other international locations for 4 weeks. This week, for the grand finale, we finally return back to the United States.
There's only one location spectacular enough in the United States to be worthy of a season finale, and that city has been home to the premier American open-wheel series at 5 different locations. Obviously, I am talking about the entertainment capital of the world, LAS VEGAS!
As mentioned before, Las Vegas has held races for the premier American open-wheel series at 5 different locations.
Las Vegas first came onto the American open-wheel racing scene in 1954. Las Vegas Park Speedway, another repurposed horse racing facility, held the final race of the 1954 AAA Champ Car season. Jimmy Bryan won the race, and with it, clinched the 1954 championship. After holding one NASCAR Grand National race and one USAC Stock Car race, the track was destroyed in 1959. The site is now home to a Westgate hotel and the Las Vegas Convention Center.
After over a decade of waiting, American open-wheel racing finally returned to Las Vegas in 1968 at Stardust International Raceway. The track was originally built by the Stardust Hotel and Casino to attract rich gamblers to the hotel, and in 1965, it started hosting sports car races. In 1968, the track held the second race of the 1968 USAC Champ Car season. Bobby Unser won the race, and later went on to win the 1968 championship title. In 1969, the Stardust Hotel was sold and the new owners abandoned the track. The site is now home to a residential area in the Spring Valley neighborhood.
American open-wheel racing left Las Vegas for yet another 10 years after that, but finally returned in 1983. The story of this race starts in F1. Throughout the second half of the 70s, there were usually two Formula One races in the United States: the United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach and the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. When Watkins Glen went off the F1 calendar after 1980, F1 looked for another American event. They too looked at Las Vegas as their spectacular season finale location. The Caesars Palace Grand Prix was the final race of the 1981 Formula One season, and it was held in the very spectacular parking lot of the Caesars Palace hotel and casino. The season finale was held there once again in 1982, but the race was extremely unpopular with fans and drivers alike, so it was dropped from the calendar after that. In 1983, the CART series picked up where F1 left off. A modified version of the F1 circuit held two races in 1983 and 1984. Mario Andretti won in 1983, and Tom Sneva won in 1984.
After yet another decade of waiting, the IRL series finally brought American open-wheel racing back to Las Vegas again. A new superspeedway called Las Vegas Motor Speedway was built just in time to host the Indy Racing League in their 1996-97 season. The speedway held 5 IRL races between 1996 and 2000. Richie Hearn won the inaugural race in 1996, and Eliseo Salazar won the second race in 1997. Arie Luyendyk won his final IndyCar race there in 1998. Sam Schmidt took his first and last IndyCar race there in 1999. The final IRL race at LVMS in 2000 was won by Al Unser, Jr.
After a few more years of Las Vegas being off the calendar again, the Champ Car series picked up where the IRL left off at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Sébastien Bourdais won both races held there in 2004 and 2005. The series didn't return to the speedway in 2006 due to the unpopularity of the event, so they found a new location to host the race in 2007.
In 2007, Champ Car returned to Las Vegas for its season-opening race. The 2007 Vegas Grand Prix was held on a street circuit in downtown Las Vegas near the Fremont Street Experience. Will Power took his first Champ Car win there. However, due to the reunification of the IRL series and the CART series, Las Vegas was off the calendar once again.
The final time IndyCar went to Las Vegas was for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championships, the final race of the 2011 season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The race did not go on for the planned 300 miles due to a 15-car crash on lap 12 which sadly killed former IndyCar champion and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon. The drivers did a 5 lap parade in tribute to Dan Wheldon, and the race was cancelled. IndyCar announced that they would not be returning to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2012, or ever again.
Since 2011, no major open-wheel series has set foot in Las Vegas again. Many rumors have circulated about F1 or IndyCar returning to Las Vegas, but none of these rumors really have any substance yet.
That is way more than enough history for today.
You will be designing your final tracks of the season in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In case you haven't seen the last two seasons, here are the rules with some new additions.

Stay within the town or city limits of the town or city assigned.
Don't worry about realism. If you want to put a pitlane in the middle of a major motorway, do it.
The circuits have to be mostly on streets. Purpose built sections may be built in parks/farms/etc but the track must be mostly a street circuit. Tracks cannot be built over previously built buildings.
You must include at least a screenshot of your track. Links to RouteBuilder or GmapPedometer will not be counted.

Track designs must be submitted by Wednesday. The voting thread will go up then.
Please include a direct Imgur or Dropbox link in your submission. RouteBuilder submissions will not be counted.
