Next-gen console buying guide - a detailed look at the next generation consoles

Hey /IndianGaming !
A new generation of gaming is nearly upon us, and for those us who aren't PC gamers, that means weighty decisions about which machine to pick as our primary gaming rig for the next six or seven years. Now that we know pretty much everything about the Xbox and PlayStation, let's compare the two to try and discern which console would offer you the best gaming experience and value. I'll do the Xbox first because the difference between the two consoles is larger than with PlayStation.

PS5 vs Xbox - Hardware

Xbox
The Xbox brand has come a long way in the past seven years. The release of the Xbox One was disastrous, plagued by always online, intrusive DRM, high pricing because of Kinect, and a bunch of other silly decisions from clueless execs who were completely out of touch which what gamers wanted. But ever since MS fired Don Mattrick and replaced him with Phil Spencer as the head of the Xbox division, Phil has slowly turned things around, coming up with many new innovations in an effort to get the xbox back up to competing with the big boys.
Their hardware team too went from creating a prohibitively priced but technically weak console, to the most powerful console of this generation. For next gen, they've gone with an even more ambitious vision, creating two consoles at different price points targeting different output resolutions, but hoping to achieve the same level of performance. That's quite the goal! Let's check out the specs.

Whoo! These are quite beefy machines. The current generation of consoles were actually quite dated even for their time. Not so this time around, these consoles are high end gaming rigs, with the Series X even beating most PC's that took the Steam hardware survey.
Before we go any further though, let's untangle this alphabet soup of tech specs and try and translate it into something readable(tech geeks bear with me, there's a lot of oversimplification here, I know!)
SMT - Stands for Simultaneous MultiThreading. Simultaneous multithreading allows different processes to utilize the same core, allowing for greater efficiency. Basically, a CPU core that could normally only do one thing at a time now spends less time sitting idle, as it works other things while waiting for instructions to finish processing. Sometimes this means way better performance when code is specifically optimized for it, other times it doesn't really matter because code has to wait on a previous operation to finish before starting a new one.
Teraflops - Short for Trillion Floating Point Operations per Second. A floating point operation is basically a standard arithmetic operation(multiplication, division etc) involving decimal numbers(floating points). So the 4 Teraflop Series S GPU, for instance, can do 4 trillion of these a second. Phew!
PCiE/NVMe - Short for Peripheral Component Interconnect Express, PCIe is just a connector standard that transfers data across components. These connectors have various lanes of traffic, so the more lanes a component utilizes, the faster information will flow, like on a road or highway. NVMe(Nonvolatile Memory Express) drives use more lanes than SATA drives probably used by your computer, which means way faster speeds. It's planning a road layout and choosing to use a highway instead of a normal road to make things faster.
Xbox Velocity Architecture - Fancy marketing term for a collection of technologies that aim to increase rendering and texture streaming efficiency i.e squeeze as much juice out of the hardware as possible. It incudes stuff like Sampler Feedback Streaming(tech that allows the hardware to load only the mipmaps that are necessary, reducing I/O because less data has to be sent to RAM to load a frame), improvements to DX, and of course a fast SSD(although less powerful than the one on the PS5). It also enables stuff like Quick Resume.
So what does this all mean for gaming? Well, the Xbox Series X is a way more powerful machine across the board, aimed at hitting a higher performance target. It needs higher specs because it's outputting 4K images as opposed to a target of 1440p on the Series S. Microsoft says the Series S specs have been neatly scaled so the only difference between the two consoles is resolution. Don't take them at their word though, there are bound to be other small differences , resolution will just be the biggest differentiator. So that means both consoles are equipped with technologies like Raytracing, Variable Rate Shading, Sampler Feedback Streaming, all that good next-gen stuff.
But wait...
What the F is Ray Tracing?!
Arguably the defining feature of Next-Generation graphics, Ray tracing is a radical new way to render realistic graphics on-screen. In order to understand how it works, let's think a bit about how graphics are rendered.
The real world is complicated. Very complicated. Trying to recreate that in a game requires the use of various algorithms to simulate various parts of the real world, like a physics engine to handle various forces and collisions, a shadow and reflection maps to handle shadows and reflections, a light map to handle the lighting of a scene, and of course a virtual camera viewport to simulate your eyes. There are a ton of things game developers do to try and recreate the real world as accurately as possible with the processing power available to them, and you can see them if you've ever opened up a game graphics menu where it allows you to toggle certain settings, or 'tricks' on or off, that were developed to make scenes look more realistic.
So where does ray tracing come in? Well, Raytracing is meant to replace 'fake' methods of rendering stuff like lighting and shadows by attempting to realistically simulate the way lighting and shadows actually work in the real world. If you've ever taken a high school physics class, you'll know that light travels in the form of rays - reflecting, refracting, getting absorbed etc ad infinitum. Ray tracing is the process by which computers attempt to simulate this in an effort to make scenes look more realistic than what can be achieved by artificial tricks.
For instance, check out Raytraced minecraft
Wow! Quite the quantum jump there, right? While minecraft's graphics were never technically very impressive, with raytracing everything looks so much nicer. Water actually looks like water and not blue lines, dark caves actually look dark and not just black, lava actually behaves like lava instead of looking like someone spilled some red paint on a light source, everything just looks that much more realistic.
It's achieved by each pixel, both inside and outside the scene(traditional rendering methods typically only consider pixels inside the scene for lighting and shadows) casting off a ray of light, the path of which is then traced around the scene until it hits a light source or an artificial limit. This eliminates the need for manually providing lightmaps or reflection details, because those can be simulated in real time and look even better. As you can imagine, it's very computationally intensive, which is why we haven't really see it go mainstream in gaming until now. Even with the monsters that are this-gen consoles, they probably won't be able to hit their performance targets with full RT. From what we can see so far, the Xbox Series X will likely run at 4k30 with RT, and the Series S will run at 1080p30 with RT.
Alright that's enough about Raytracing for now, back to the console comparison.
Some quick FAQs
  1. Is there any benefit to getting the Series X if I don't have a 4k TV? - Yes, but probably not a 15k difference. The Series X will still be processing higher resolution textures and might even give you better framerates in games, but the primary reason to get a Series X over the S if you don't have a 4k TV will probably just be to future-proof yourself in case you ever do decide to buy one in the future
  2. Why would I need Quick Resume? - A strange question, but one I have nevertheless seen asked a fair number of times. To clarify, you don't really 'use' quick resume as you benefit from it. Just opening a game will take you right back to the state it was in when you last closed it, so you don't need to sit through loading screens, menus, or studio logos to get in the game. It also persists across cold boots.
  3. What are the PC equivalents to the Xbox Series X specs? - The Series X GPU lies somewhere between the RTX 2080 Super and the RTX 2080 ti as far as raw performance is concerned. As for the CPU, the closest PC equivalent would probably be the AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, or a less than an Intel i7 9700k.
PS5
Arguably the more highly anticipated console, the PS5 succeeds the PS4, which absolutely crushed the Xbox One this generation in terms of sales and games. Fueled by phenomenal exclusives like God of War, Spiderman, Bloodborne, TLOU2 etc, the PS4 juggernaut's got quite a bit of momentum going into this generation. Sadly as we all know, it hit a bit of a legal hiccup coming to India so it'll be delayed. We also don't know as much about it as we do the Xbox because Sony hasn't actually sent out any units to Influencers/Reviewers yet, so all we have to go on are the specs, demos, and teardowns that Sony themselves have provided.
This generation, Sony's offering two variants of the PS5, but in contrast to Microsoft's strategy, both their consoles are equally powerful and offer basically the same gaming experience, the only difference being that one plays discs while the other doesn't. The price difference between the two consoles is also 10k as opposed to 15k with the Xbox.
Because the consoles share identical specs, I won't be comparing them with each other. Instead, let's compare them to the Xboxes. Here's the same table again, except with PS5 in the middle this time.

On paper, the Xbox Series X is the most powerful console, then the PlayStations, with the Series S coming in at a distant third. The Series X has a slightly faster CPU, a significantly faster GPU, and slightly faster RAM than the PS5. Meanwhile, the PS5 has the edge in I/O throughput, which is about twice as fast as that on the Series X when it comes to raw numbers.
What do these numbers actually mean for games? Well, we just don't know yet, because multiplats have yet to be benchmarked on the PS5. Sony seems to be playing their cards close to the vest, and haven't given their hardware to any reviewers to try. It's a safe guess to say that games will probably look slightly better on the Series X with maybe slightly better performance, but the difference is unlikely to be significant and probably won't matter to most casual gamers. Meanwhile, the difference in I/O throughput could mean that the PS5 will possibly load worlds and start up games faster than the Series X. It will probably be most noticeable in exclusive first party titles that are coded to specifically take advantage of the SSD.
Let's discuss hardware value by price. When it comes to price, the best value hardware wise is clearly the PS5 DE. For merely 5k more than the Series S you're getting 3-4x the processing power. If you have a 4k TV at home, it's probably not worth considering the Series S, just the PS5 and the Series X. Maybe when the Series S is more reasonably priced in India according to the $1 = ₹100 rule it could be a contender, but as of now, it's my personal opinion that the Series S is just not good value in India for those who have a 4K TV at home and the budget to afford one.
But of course there's more to a system than just hardware. Now that we've drawn up some specs comparisons, let's get down to the software side.

PS5 vs Xbox- Software

For most gamers, this will be the real meat of the comparison. The power differences between the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are probably not significant enough on their own to decide a purchase, so for most casual gamers, software is what will decide it.
Xbox
By far the biggest difference software side on the Xbox is Xbox Game Pass. Love or hate Xbox, you can't deny that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is quite simply the best value in gaming right now. Following this guide from the subreddit , you can get 3 years of it for as low as ₹7500. In case you've been living under a rock, here's what you get with Xbox Game Pass.
  1. Xbox Live Gold (Multiplayer and Games with Gold)
  2. Access to a growing and rotating library of ~350 games(as part of PC+Console. Console only - ~250 Games)
  3. Perks - This can sometimes include cool stuff like the presently included 3 months of Discord Nitro, but so far for the most part I've not found it to be of too much use unless you play a lot of free to play games like World of Tanks or Warframe.
  4. xCloud - Not really relevant in India right now, but if you go the 3 years of gamepass route it might be a nice bonus down the line. It's possible to access xCloud right now with a VPN, but it's not a great experience.
  5. EA Play - Game Pass will also soon include access to EA Play, the basic tier of their subscription service, including very popular games like FIFA, Battlefield, Sims, etc. It also includes trials of the latest EA games.
  6. A 20% Discount on buying the games included in Game Pass, if you decide to buy them to keep.
It's also worth noting that all future Xbox Games Studios games will land on Xbox Game Pass Day 1, which is a really good value considering that Xbox now has 23 studios making games. While most of them are a ways off, it looks like a good lineup, especially if you're into RPG's.
Game Pass is pretty much the USP of the Xbox right now. For gamers on limited budgets, it's just tremendous value. For ₹700 per month(It's regionally priced too!), you get to play way more games and have much more fun with your console than you could have had without the service. For many, this could possibly be the decider.
The second big difference, of course, is in the exclusives. Here's what the upcoming Xbox exclusive lineup looks like -
  1. Halo Infinite
  2. Microsoft Flight Simulator
  3. Senua's Saga - Hellblade 2
  4. Avowed
  5. Fable
  6. Everwild
  7. Forza Motorsport
  8. Starfield
  9. The Elder Scrolls VI
It's also worth noting that all these games will still go on PC Game Pass Day 1. If you have a PC capable of running these games when they come out, then missing out on Xbox games shouldn't really be an issue or a deciding factor.
The third big difference is in backwards compatibility. The Series X and S will be compatible with every single Xbox One game, a lot of the most popular Xbox 360 games, and some of the most popular OG Xbox games. Here's the full list of 607 supported titles. It's great if you're already invested in the platform or are nostalgic for old titles like Burnout Revenge, Red Dead Redemption, Black Ops 2, Fallout New Vegas, etc. Probably won't be a big thing for most people, but for those it will help, it can make a purchase.
there's also a bunch of conveniences like quick resume and play anywhere. Quick Resume works like a save state where the console just loads back to where you last were when you quit the game instead of starting the game afresh. It works with multiple games at a time and persists even if you pull the plug on the Xbox. Play Anywhere works with some titles where your saves carry over from Xbox to PC. Nice to have, but not anything major.
Finally, an important note - unlike the PS5, even Free to Play games need a subscription to play online. So yeah, you can't play stuff like Fortnite or Warzone without a live gold or game pass ultimate subscription. If you spend a lot of time playing F2P games and can't afford game pass, this is a significant downside that might even be a dealbreaker, depending on how much time you spend playing F2P and how broke you are.
Quick FAQ's
Will future Bethesda Games be Xbox exclusive? - We still don't have definitive confirmation on whether future Bethesda titles will be exclusive, but it's highly likely that they will be, considering that Minecraft excluded, no other Microsoft first party studio currently develops games for other platforms. Phil Spencer also recently went on record to say that they're not worried about losing out on PS sales. Keep in mind that games like DOOM, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, will sell many Xboxes if they go exclusive. So while we can't claim anything definitively either way, don't buy a PS5 expecting to play these games for sure.
What's the best deal on Game Pass? - Currently it's the 3 year gold conversion deal. It probably won't last forever, so don't pass up the opportunity. Follow the guide linked above.
Are PC and Console Game Pass the same? - No. They are similar services but have different libraries. While all Xbox Games Studios games will release Day 1 on both platforms, major third party titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 are not likely to hit PC game pass.
PS5
Software wise, the biggest reason to buy the PS5 are for its exclusives. So far, PS4 exclusives blow Microsoft's out of the water. God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne, time and again Sony has proven that they have some of the best studios out there. The PS5 will certainly have some spectacular games. Here's what the upcoming PS5 exclusive lineup looks like -
  1. Spider-Man : Miles Morales(Launch)
  2. Demon's Souls (Launch)
  3. God of War - Ragnarok
  4. Ratchet and Clank : A Rift Apart
  5. Gran Turismo 7
  6. Sackboy - A Big Adventure
  7. Godfall
  8. Final Fantasy 16 (timed)
  9. Deathloop, Ghostwire(timed)
The majority of these games will most likely only be playable on PlayStation i.e they won't be coming to PC, so that's another thing to keep in mind when deciding which system to buy. They'll all mostly be phenomenal games, Sony titles usually are, especially first party ones.
On the downside, great games can be quite expensive. As you've heard, Sony has confirmed that all PS5 first party exclusives will be 4999 going forward(no regional pricing). So if you care about playing Ratchet and Clank/God of WaGran Turismo at launch, be ready to shell out the cash. Personally I don't believe 5k for a single player game is worth it in India, but of course it depends on your personal finances.
To alleviate this somewhat we have PS Now and the PS Plus collection, Sony's answer to Game Pass. The PS Plus collection includes a lot of popular PS4 exclusives and some third party titles like Arkham Knight and Fallout 4. It's a really good deal if you're jumping into the PS ecosystem for the first time, but those who already own PS5's will probably already have played most of the games on there and will only benefit once they grow the service.
Sony also a bunch of conveniences in the UI like activites, which let you jump right into a certain part of the game. It's also rumored to have some sort of quick resume, but nothing's been confirmed in that regard yet.
As for Backwards Compatibility, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will be BC with nearly all PS4 titles, but PS1,2,and 3 games will be left to history. Regrettable, but probably not a dealbreaker for most people.
So on the Sony side, we have some killer exclusives but not as much value with highly priced games and no game pass.

Verdict

So, for the most important question, which one do you get? Well, even after 21,000 words I won't really pretend to have an answer. There are too many variables to consider. How invested you are in a particular ecosystem, your personal financial situation, the type of games you like, etc. That said, I have some broad recommendations -
  1. If you have already have a 4k TV and have/plan to buy online - The PS5 DE is the way to go. The asinine pricing of the Series S in India makes this particular situation an easy call in my opinion. Yeah games will be expensive, but if you have the budget to buy a 4k TV maybe you can afford it. If not, you could always wait and pick up the games later when they go on sale. Kind of a bummer, but you'd still be playing on better hardware and actually putting your 4k TV to good use, instead of wasting its potential on the Series S. Maybe this will change if the Series S ever comes down in price, but for now this is the easiest reco to make.
  2. If you don't own a 4k TV and are strapped for cash(maybe you lost your job during rona), get the Series S. The Series S gets a lot of flak from hardcore gamers but IMO it is still a great gaming machine. for those upgrading from the Xbox One/One S/PS4/PS4 Slim it will still be a huge upgrade. Don't get carried away by 4k Marketing. 1440p gaming still looks great, and if the Series S can keep its promises of 1440p 60fps or even 1080p w/ Raytracing, games will look gorgeous and play great. Game Pass is also phenomenal value, and you get to play way more games for cheaper than on the PS4.
  3. If neither of these statements are close to your use case, don't consider the Series S or the PS5 DE. The PS5 DE might be a tempting buy for those who own discless collections and want to save money, but that would be a mistake. You're probably going to be playing on this console for at least 5-6 years, and are going to buy many games in that time. With PS5 games priced as highly as they are, you're almost certainly going to make up the difference and more buying expensive non-regionally priced games. The PS5 might cost more, but buying physical will save you a ton of money over digital purchases.
  4. XSX vs PS5 is kind of a toss-up. XSX is compact and more powerful and is overall better value with Game Pass, but doesn't have many next-gen games to play at launch(most Xbox heavy hitters are landing much later). Meanwhile the PS5 has Demon's Souls and Miles Morales which comes with Spider Man Remastered. Personally I would go with an XSX in this situation because it's better value and will probably have more exclusives down the line(I don't mind waiting), but if you're eager to get on the next-gen hype train as soon as possible or are already invested in the PS ecosystem/you just love PS games that much, the PS5 is also a pretty good purchase. Definitely the hardest call to make.
  5. If you are much into WRPGS, go with Xbox. Microsoft has a solid lock on western RPG's this generation, with titles like Fable, Avowed, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Starfield. Given that Sony doesn't really make these sorts of games themselves and there aren't that many big WRPG devs left(CDPR and BioWare are pretty much the only ones I think?), you're better off going with Xbox if you're a fan of these sorts of games.

Closing Thoughts

Phew! This write-up turned out to be a lot longer than I had initially expected. It was quite a bit of work writing it, and I did quite a bit of research to ensure that it's as accurate as possible. I'm still human so I've probably made some mistakes still, so please feel free to correct me if you spot an error.
And of course, these are ultimately just my thoughts on the matter as someone who owns and plays on both consoles right now, as well as PC, and will probably end up getting both new consoles down the line. I've tried to keep this as unbiased as possible, but if you feel I've misrepresented something or left something out, do weigh in in the comments and help other people out.
Tl;Dr - Consoles good, console war bad.

TIFU and ended up speaking to my own account hacker

Okay, so bear with me because this is a somewhat long story, but it literally just happened today and I'm still pretty dumbfounded. So a bit of background, this weekend I lost my internet because the people redoing our driveway accidentally cut the service cable. So I'm currently posting this using a hotspot off my phone. It's also how I was able to use internet access in this story. Also, the reason I felt it was appropriate to post this on TIFU is because I feel like I messed up by not having my account as secure as I possibly could.
So today I get a notification on my phone via email telling me that my Playstation account name had been changed. I was like, huh... That's weird. I haven't been on my Playstation in like a week because I mostly game on my PC now. I also had no internet access so clearly I didn't change it. Then I scroll back in my emails and see another email saying my account password had been changed a few days prior. Okay. Clearly something fishy is going on. So I immediately change my password and log onto my PS4. I then set up my hotspot and use this super crappy connection to the internet to log into my Playstation. Upon loading up the dashboard, I get notifications in the corner telling me I'm being invited to a party by a name I don't recognize. My blood was boiling at this moment. I was like, okay maybe these guys have answers since they're friends with whoever took over my account. So I join.
I sit in the party and listen to these two kids who were probably roughly 12 or 13 years old, talk back and forth in Arabic. Finally, I speak up in the party after sitting there for a minute listening, I say, "Hey. So which one of you knows who stole my account?" Hoping maybe they might know a little English. It's a big world, there's a chance. They both stop talking. One of them leaves. I'm now like giving a sigh that I might not get answers this way. The other guy stayed in the chat, so I spoke up again and repeated myself, "Look, I'm the original owner of this account. This account was stolen from me. Do you know who stole it?" at this point I'm like thinking to myself that there's no real point in knowing who. These guys are from a completely different part of the world than me, there's no way I could do anything about it anyway. Still nothing from him.
I leave the party and start looking through my messages and friends list. I now have like 7 or 8 new friends, all with really strange names (like ri-t13 as an example), all of them with their language set on Arabic. My messages were full of voice captures from these kids talking back and forth in Arabic about how they now have my account, the first free game they're gonna get is Fall Guys. As I'm listening to this I get a party invite again. This time from the other dude that left the party originally. Okay, well maybe they'll talk to me. So I join the party and the both of them are sitting in there talking frantically to each other, then finally one of them addresses me as "Brother" and asks what I want. I then ignorantly say in English, "I just wanted my account back. It was stolen from me. Do you know who stole it?" They knew enough English to know what I was saying, I then hear him say "Hold on." His other friend is watching videos or something super loud on the other line. I then hear Google translate in English say, "I am the one that stole your account." I was like Okay. So I pulled up Google Translator and started translating into Arabic (Saudi Arabia). I figured they'd be able to decipher the horrible translations.
The exchange went a lot like this: "Okay. How did you steal my account." Silence follows before both of them speak back and forth.
He then says, "I bought it online." "I bought the account online from you on Darklow" (it was either Darklow or Darkflow, the sound quality was terrible so it was hard to make out). Following it up with, "I'm poor and can't afford. I bought your account from you for 40 Rubles." Now I feel bad. Like yeah, my account was hacked but this kid just wants to play video games. But at the same time this is mine. I'm also piecing together that he's probably currently using a hacked account to even converse with me, so clearly he must know what he's doing and that it's wrong. Not only that but I'm like scratching my head and look up how much that costs in USD. Turns out my account was sold real cheap: $0.55. What a deal for him, because I had PS Plus, and a very large collection of games.
I'm quiet for a moment, he then asks what my name is and I tell him, "Matthew." The both of them say something and they started laughing. Then he asked me what I wanted. I again translated that I wanted my account back and I'm taking it back, I then ask what he wants. He tells me he wants money. I'm dumbfounded at this moment. "Money? I don't have money. Look I wish I could give you a refund, because I'm taking this account back from you. But I have no money to give." I frantically typed into the translator and repeated it a few times because they kept asking me to play it again since they couldn't hear it, which happened a lot during this whole bizarre exchange.
He then jokingly says he wants a million dollars and laughs. Then he said no no no no, then said "$15. I want $15." I explain to him I have no money. He then comes at me with the translator saying, "You own all the games and you're going to say you don't have money?" I explain to him that I don't have money to give him because I'm also poor. He then says again, "Okay, $5." I tell him I have no money. I then tell him I don't even have a job (thanks to Covid). It hits me, why the hell am I explaining myself to a 13 year old kid?
He responds asking for $5. Now I type furiously into the translator, "I'm not giving you money. I'm taking my account back. Don't buy accounts from online. They could be active and you're stealing from people. It's not right to steal. I'm poor too, I understand where you're coming from, but this is my account and I earned these games. It's wrong to steal from people because it's hurtful." I play it back to him and hear silence. I just lectured some kid about how he could be hurting people but I doubt it would really hit home at all. He's probably been doing this to play games a ton. Eventually, I told him I have what I want and he says goodbye. I leave the party chat.
This is where stuff got really strange. I was going through my messages and I found tons of voice messages back and forth between the hackeaccount purchaser and his friends. There were screen captures of all of my cars in my garages on GTA. I'm now assuming he probably sold a bunch of them, although I can't check until my internet comes back on. Which, I don't play GTA anymore but a lot of that stuff I grinded really hard for, so it's a bit of a bummer if he did sell any of my stuff. There were also photos of my CoD: Warzone loadouts and skins, which now explains why half of my loadouts had been randomly changed in the middle of this week (I played on my PC and some of my kits were all sorts of funky). I had thought it was just a bug. He also decided to play Fortnite on my account as well as Fallguys. Who knows what else.
I now finally have my account completely secure and reset. My name is reset, and I can't even assess the damages until my internet returns somewhat later in the week. While telling my friends about this entire endeavor, I was told that I should share it on Reddit because it's absolutely bonkers that I even got to converse with my own hacker.
In hindsight I really wish I had asked where the kid was from, because I wish I didn't have to refer to him as a kid who speaks Arabic (which could literally be anyone).
TL;DR My PSN account was stolen and bought for 40 rubles online by some 13 year old who spoke Arabic. He changed my account password and name which tipped me off that I got hacked. He had been playing on my account for like a week without me noticing and probably had a ton of fun on my games. Upon login I had the chance to awkwardly talk to him through party chat via Google Translator text to voice function. I now finally have my account back after lecturing him and his friend on how stealing is wrong and hurtful.

Today I ended up speaking to my own account hacker

Okay, so bear with me because this is a somewhat long story, but it literally just happened today and I'm still pretty dumbfounded. So a bit of background, this weekend I lost my internet because the people redoing our driveway accidentally cut the service cable. So I'm currently posting this using a hotspot off my phone. It's also how I was able to use internet access in this story.
The r/DCcomics Guide to Free Stuff to Do in Your Fortress of Solitude

Hello!
As COVID-19 continues to sweep the globe, and self-isolation and quarantine puts more and more of us stuck inside, we’re all likely to go a little stir crazy. Unfortunately for us, we don’t have 12 batmobiles to detail, nor do we have a Giant Penny to polish in the mean time. But that doesn’t mean we have to sit there and watch paint dry!
So, here is our (ever evolving) guide to free content available to you during this crisis. We’ve tried to tailor this to free-to-play, free-to-watch, free-to-read as much as we can, but we’ve made the decision to make this list open to everyone to add anything and everything they find to help us all through this troubling time. Just remember: NO PIRACY.
Remember, the only way to stop the spread is to self-isolate and only go out in times of need. Please keep your loved ones safe by talking to them on the phone and limiting contact.
Hopefully, the night is at its darkest, and it’s almost dawn.

10 cheap games you might enjoy but didn't care about

Hi /ps4! A couple of weeks ago I made a post asking if you’d be interested in a recompilation of cheap games with a short review for our beloved system and since the post got lots of love here I am presenting you the first part. I figured I should do this in a few posts so I don’t bore you with a wall of text, so let’s start with just 10. All of the games I’ll review are either very very cheap (since they are old AAA games or indie games) or have been free with PS Plus a in the past year or so and might be collecting cybernetic dust on your digital library. Keep in mind English is not my first language so excuse any mistakes I might make. Feel free to correct me since I’m always looking to improve my skills.
1)
Game: Furi
How long it lasts: 7/8 hs or 20+ if you go for the plat (very skill dependent)
Game summary: You play as a prisoner escaping from his cell. You’ll have to fight 9 bosses to reach freedom. The are no “levels” in this game, just boss fights.
Strengths: The combat is amazing and very responsive, it’s also fair, you can first time any boss if you’re paying attention. The story is actually quite decent (even though I didn’t understand the end that much). The soundtrack is also fine. The colors in the game are beautiful, even when your whole screen is loaded with enemy shots you can tell where your character is and where the safe spots are.
Weakness: You do get a bit clueless on some fights, more than once I end up looking a fight on youtube to find out I was over complicating things. The plat is pretty hard to get.
Play if: You are up for the challenge. You like to fight bosses. Think of this game as an indie bloodborne.
Don’t play if: You get frustrated easily.
2)
Game: Child of Light
How long it lasts: 13 hs
Game summary:You play as a young girl that passed away but somehow wakes up in another fantasy world like Narnia. The game is an RPG without random encounters (you can avoid almost every fight).
Strengths:The art design is amazing. The characters feel alive. It seems like you’re playing a child’s book (the whole game is told by rhymes) but it gets more mature as you advance, more than once I found myself reading the lines out cause I was that invested into the story. Innovative combat. Kind of Co-op, let’s say it’s a great game to play with your girlfriend or son/daughter, she doesn’t have to do much but it still useful and necessary. A challenge if you play on hard.
Weakness:You might found the game a bit childish. No plat trophy.
Play if:You’re into RPGs games or looking for a good story.
Don’t play if:You don’t like RPGs, you don’t like rhymes or don’t like the art style.
3)
Game: Bastion
How long it lasts:I don’t remember since I put it down a few times but less than 10 for sure.
Game summary:You take control of “the kid” as you are trying to build some kind of town and you are forced to look for some crystals. It’s an action rpg where you can use two weapons and switch them as you please while you fight.
Strengths:Gameplay is fun, kinda like the Ys series. Some guy narrates everything you do and that’s amazing. The art style is beautiful. Lots of weapons to choose from.
Weakness:The game does get repetitive towards the end even though it’s pretty short. While the gameplay is fun, it lacks deepness, you find yourself doing things for the 8th consecutive time and it wasn’t as fun as it was the firsts few times.
Play if:You liked the Ys series/action RPGs with a view from above.
Don’t play if:You’re not into action RPGs tbh
4)
Game: Transistor
How long it lasts: 7/8hs. 15 if you go for the plat. It has a lot of re-playability and challenges to do if you’re into it. The platinum trophy is fun (even though you have to do a second playthrough)
Game summary:You play as a singer who lost her voice and goes on a journey to get it back while you fight your way through a town that has been destroyed. I don’t want to label this game as an Action RPG or an Rpg since its quite unique.
Strengths:Like in Bastion, you have a “narrator” that guides you and talks about what you’re doing. The combat and gameplay are amazing, first, you can either fight like an action RPG just using your powers to kill stuff or you can press a button and the time freezes and you can select a few actions to do while the enemies stay in place. Another amazing thing about this game is the fact that while you’re progressing you’re picking up new “powers” that you can use in whatever way you like, you have active nods, passive nods, and even some nods to upgrade your powers and you can use any of them in any slot with a different result. It sounds complicated but it’s way easier than I make it sound. The soundtrack is amazing (I have one of the songs on my Spotify list) and so is the story.
Weakness:Maybe enemy fatigue, you do fight the same enemies quite a bit, but it’s not that big of a deal.
Play if:If you like RPGs or Action RPGs, or you are just looking for something different, this game is quite unique. Don’t play if:you only play Fifa/cod/fortnite. Otherwise, give it a shot.
5)
Game: Infamous Second Son
How long it lasts:10 hours? Lot of replayability since you can take different paths that give you different powers. Also, the platinum seems pretty fun.
Game summary:Your typical superhero game, you are a bad kid that doesn’t like rules and end up with superpowers, but a Hitler-like woman doesn’t like people having superpowers and locks ups behind bars anyone that does have them, so normally you want to stop her reich and not go to jail.
Strengths:Really fun game, the story is good enough and you can choose whether you are a good hero (saving innocent people and stuff) or a bad guy (killing everyone whether they are good or bad), the great thing about this is that it reflects on what kind of powers you are able to unlock. The combat is good, a bit hard if you play on… hard, but still fun. Moving through the city feels amazing and getting the collectibles doesn’t feel like a chore (I'm looking at you GoW, fuck Odin's ravens) since they always give you some advantage. Also, this is one of the few games on Ps4 that makes use of the motion sensor of the DS.
Weakness:It might suffer a bit from combat fatigue at the end, also a few fights just ain't that fun since you might die because you got 500 guys shooting at you.
Play if:You like superheroes or the new Spiderman game but are poor like me.
Don’t play if: You’re not into adventure superheroes games.
6)
Game: Dead Cells
How long it lasts: Depends on how good you are (you can beat it in 2 hours maybe if you know what you’re doing), it also depends on whether you want to beat it once and be done with it or keep playing the hardest difficulties. Between 10 to 20 hours maybe but it’s hard to say.
Game summary: Okay I don’t know shit about the story at all I know it’s an excuse to justify you dying and begin reborn a lot and you’re supposed to kill the king (whoever he is). The game is a rougelike/metroidvania type of game. You unlock a few abilities and they open new paths you can take.
Strengths: While I don’t like metroidvania-type games, I did enjoyed my first playthrough of the game, you’ve lots of weapons and abilities to mix in whichever way you want, there’s a shit ton of different combinations you can use to play through the game, depending on how you like to play, maybe you’re a melee fighter, maybe you like to set up traps or just enjoy killing enemies from afar, do as you please because it’s all there. The controls are amazing, which is key in these kinds of game. It has a bit of pick up and play potential, since you can close the game and pick it up where you left it, but a good run probably takes more than half an hour.
Weakness: It does get repetitive, even though the levels are different each time, you face the same enemies every time, by the time you beat the game and unlock the next difficulty you are either too “underlevel” (meaning you’ll have to grind a bit playing the same thing you just beat) or to burned to play it all over again. Also some weapons are clearly better than others, and some combinations were just plain OP (Maybe it changed with a patch, devs seem to be releasing a lot of patches, which is a great sing)
Play if: You like rouge likes/metroidvania games.
Don’t play if: If you don’t like 16/8 bit games (I don’t know which one is it) or rouge likes.
7)
Game: Megaman X legacy collection (1) (Do not confuse with the part 2 of the collection, stay away from that)
How long it lasts: 12 hours? I already knew all the games when I beat them so if you’re new to the series it might take longer, closer to 20ish.
Game summary: This is a collection of 4 megaman games (you know the blue man that shoots shit from a beam on his hand). This is not a remake nor a remaster(or maybe they are, im not sure about the terminology, the important info here is the graphics are the same from back in the day), just a collection/recompilation. You get Megaman X1, X2, X3, X4 and a new challenge mode where you face 2 bosses at once. Your typical 2d platformer but better.
Strengths: You get 4 games, each one better than the last. The progression system in the game is amazing, you unlock new powers (beating the bosses of the game) and abilities (exploring the levels) that make your job easier. You have to fight 8 bosses and each one has its own weaknesses (other bosses powers). The games are a lot of fun, level design, bosses, weapons, power ups, the recipe works wonders. The soundtrack is amazing and a classic. You can choose an “easy” mode if you’re new to the game. The new game is a challenge even to the veterans. The plat trophy is quite easy to get but…
Weakness: … some trophies are a drag and unnecessary. Fps drops on some parts like in the OG games. The new mode is a lot of fun, but the last pair of bosses is hard as fuck, and kinda unfair.
Play if: You liked megaman back in the day, or want a great (but old) 2d plataformer.
Don’t play if: You don’t like retro games, keep in mind these are old games and while the gameplay is amazing, the visuals are not.
8)
Game: Strider
How long it lasts: 5 or 6 hours. You can get the platinum trophy in less than 8 hours.
Game summary: I don’t remember a lot of the story but you’re that a ninja and you do ninja stuff. The game is a 2d platformer with a very strong Metroid vibe, you know, you need to go to place A but you can’t since you need a double jump so you go to place B to get the double jump power up and then you got to place A, repeat till the end.
Strengths: Lots of power ups that aren’t hard to find, you don’t need to play with a guide to get most of them. Combat is fast paced and fun. Bosses are great. Controls are on point. Plat trophy is quite easy to get (but it does require a second playthrough)
Weakness: You can abuse certain abilities that make the game less fun. A bit of back tracking.
Play if: You like fast paced plataformers or Metroid.
Don’t play if: You don’t like 2d Metroid like platformers or really hate ninjas.
9)
Game: 99 VIDAS
How long it lasts: 3 or 4 hours? Lot of replayability.
Game summary: Okay I’d never thought about buying this game but since it was free I gave it a shot, I suggest you do the same if you like it, not sure how much this game is worth tbh. Old school beat em up with a good sense of humor.
Strengths: You can play co-op(off and online, up to 4 players), the game is kinda of challenge, and you earn points to unlock a few new powers.
Weakness: Game is short and nothing special, it was free with ps plus but im not sure if is worth a few bucks.
Play if: You like beat em ups/Want a 4man short couch co op game. Don’t play if: You don’t like indies or beat em ups, or cant stand retro graphics.
10)
Game: Alienation
How long it lasts: 10 hours.
Game summary: A pretty good twin stick shooter, I never paid any attention to the story, sorry. You fight aliens with characters that have different abilities.
Strengths: 4 player couch co-op (or online), that’s the biggest strength of this game tbh, the game is alright, lots of fun, but I’d never have played alone, the fact that I can play with my friends on my house is what made me spent a few hours (almost) finishing the game(which you can do a lot of times and don’t get bored). It has a pretty fun loot system. Graphics are really nice, soundtrack is meh, and the progression system is quite good but…
Weakness: Some abilities are just trash. It took a while to find a new good weapon and there wasn’t that much variety. Waiting for everyone to set up their character was annoying (not sure if it’s the game fault or my friends fault)
Play if: You enjoy twin stick shooter, love to kill alines, or you are just looking for something to play with a few friends either local or online.
Don’t play if:Honestly? If you’re looking for a game to play with a few friends give it a shot, but it’s not for everyone like, lets say, overcooked.
So that’s all for today guys, let me know if you enjoyed this and want a second part, also, im open to criticism and any suggestions regarding formatting or the reviewing format.
Edit: though I should say the list is in no particular order, also I have like other 20 games I played that “didn’t make it” for no particular reason

Family Management settings and the like and connecting sub account to multiplayer

Hello All, Just got my son a PS4 for cheaper prices. Figured out how to get the same game on both consoles paying only once. Now we're having issues with him connecting to EA to multiplayer. My current setup is allowing everything without age restrictions, he can play the game on campaign mode. I am the family account manager, and I have him setup underneath my name. So he doesn't have PS Plus, but I do. Is him not having ps plus on his name/account an issue with him connecting to EA? He can play Dauntless and Fortnite just fine, but NFS isn't allowing him online. I can connect to multiplayer just fine. I'm hoping that this isn't a long-term issue, and maybe thinking just avoiding EA in the future. Not sure. Can y'all give me some insight if you've experienced this before?

Destiny 2 New Light and PS Plus

So, me and my friends installed Destiny 2 on our PS4s, just to discover that you can play the game without the PS Plus subscription, BUT if you want to play with your friends (aka make a squad with them) you have to pay for the PS Plus subscription.
Isn't the game supposed to be free2play? I recall other f2p games on PS4 (Warframe, Fortnite) that doesn't need PS plus subscription to play online, even with your friends. Then for destiny 2 you can access all services for free, you can play with random players for free, but if I want to do the same things, just with my friends, I have to pay.
I know for others game you pay for them AND you also pay to play online, but Destiny 2 New Light was advertised as a f2p game, which on consoles, partially isn't.
TL;dr Just buy a PC

Nintentube Spotlight with AgeofBordom and SwitchIndieFix!

Every month we host a Nintentube Spotlight shining that light on two new creators of the community, it offers a chance for us to get to know them better as creators and as our peers. AgeofBordom and SwitchIndieFix have been with Nintentube since the start and have been very supportive of the ideals of Nintentube early on and helped pushed the community to were it is today!
We will be featuring both interviews in this post, be sure to leave your thoughts on the interviews in the comments and let us know your favorite content of theirs as well!

AgeofBordom Interview

1. What is the origins of your Youtube channel name?
Age of Boredom started it’s life years ago as a table top game channel. I was really in too table top gaming at the time, playing a few systems like Warhammer (Fantasy), Dreadball (sci-fi sports game), Infinity (Anime inspired sci-fi) and Bolt Action (WWII), I was more actively involved in a collective called Corehammer which was a group of friends that started a blog which I did some writing for. I also run a few Warhammer tournaments in London which was fun (I think the largest was around 40 players). Around this time, the company that made Warhammer decided to kill that universe and transition it to a game called Age of Sigmar (there was a lot of internet rage at this point online). After doing a lot of writing and event stuff, I thought it would be fun to start a table top channel, I was watching a lot of videos by a guy called Ash Baker who has a channel called Guerrilla Miniature Games and got inspired to try my hand at it. So I was looking for a name and Age of Sigmar was on everyone’s lips in that scene and I thought we all play these games because it’s better than being bored, right? I really liked that it sounded a little epic but with a hint of sarcasm at the same time... so I stuck with that.
Life got in the way of the channel originally so I ended up stopping after around 10 videos. When I decided to get back into YouTubing, I thought about changing the name to some Switch or Nintendo related, but I still liked Age of Boredom and felt it worked still. Plus, if the channel lasts 5+ years and there is a new console out, it’s going to sound quite dated. I think I maybe attract less viewers in the short term with an enigmatic name, but if this goes long term, it could pay dividends.
2. What made you want to start creating videos on Youtube? What was the first video you ever made on Youtube?
So I kinda covered the original channel above, but the reason for starting the channel again was basically because I found that I had a bunch of free time and some filming equipment. So by trade I’m a graphic designer and in 2017 I was starting to get more involved in video production in my day job. However in November they decided to downsize which meant I was let go, luckily I negotiated that I could take the video equipment with me. So I had a bunch of free time on my hands and I wanted to keep making videos... so I restarted the channel. Now I’m freelance, so on my few days off, I get to record videos and then I generally edit a bunch on the weekend.
So my first series as a gaming channel was Doom (which I think you will remember KoolAid). It had just came out on the Switch and I was a fan of Doom and Doom II from playing them on the LAN at school in the 90s (yeah I’m in my 30s!). If I watch that video now it’s a little cringe, but that just shows how much I’ve improved. It still gets views from time to time, so it can’t be that bad, right? The series took a little break in the middle when I realised that I was doing too many series in one go and thought I should just get some finished. When it restarted, I think I was a lot better as a Lets Player... hopefully I’m still improving.
3. Your channel specifically focuses on Nintendo Switch content, what made you want to focus on that system specifically and how long have you been gaming with Nintendo for?
I guess it was timing, I picked up a Switch in August or September and that pretty much replaced my PS4 as my main gaming device. I think when it game to my channel, I thought it would be best to stick to one format and the Switch is my main squeeze. I don’t think it hurt that the system was still young and it meant there was less channels around doing exclusively Switch Let’s Plays, so that also helped with some early growth.
Back in the 90s I was a Sega kid, I asked my parents for a Master System for Christmas any Birthday (they are quite close, so I could get away for asking for one larger present and then ask my uncle and aunt for money so I could buy games, something I did with a lot of my future consoles). So it came time for me to get my Master System and my Dad told me that he didn’t buy one because his friend told him that there was a new and better thing. Turned out it was a Mega Drive which was pretty cutting edge at the time (this was pre SNES). As a Kid in the UK, I can’t really ever remember people having a NES, it wasn’t until the SNES came out that everyone seemed to decided that there was this thing called a Console War. So a few years pass and I’m still loving my trusty Mega Drive but I decide I also want a SNES, obviously I’m told no  and I continue on playing exclusively Sega stuff. I also got to play on family friends 32X and Saturn Consoles when they came out. So years have passed and enough time has passed that I think I can ask for a new console, still a Sega fanboy... in obviously want a Saturn. So again, my Dad friend tells me to wait a little while longer as a new thing is coming out.
So with that I was lucky enough to get a PlayStation on launch (until I was an adult, I never really appreciated how generous my parents are). I think essentially this is what really turned me into a gamer for life. I never did get that SNES (until I got one as an adult). Anyway, I’m sure you’re thinking what about Nintendo? Well... again my parents really are generous people. When the N64 came out, I asked for money for my birthday, Christmas, some money saved and cash from selling off PlayStation games I managed to get myself an N64 with Lylat Wars (or Starfox 64 for non Europeans) and Diddy Kong racing. I had friends who also had N64s, so we could swap games with no need to buy the obvious Mario titles. I do remember the one game we all owned was Goldeneye!
...all though several years later it might have got traded in for another PlayStation :flushed: That actually was the only Nintendo system I’ve owned for any amount of time, I briefly owned a GameCube with Resident Evil 4 but that (and a SNES) really was it before I got a Switch.
4. You have done many let's play series by now, what series of yours are you most proud of?
Ok this one is easy. Floor Kids was the first series where I started to get more comfortable narrating games and just being myself. It’s also just a super fun game that I really love. Golf Story also has another special place in my heart because throughout that (long) series I made a few changes to the channel. I got a better audio set up and also started to use a face cam which actually made me feel even more comfortable making content.
5. In these parts you are known as the Thumbnail Master! How did you become so proficient in designing thumbnails, did it take you awhile to make it your craft? How long on average does it take you to come up with a thumbnail idea and create it?
Haha, thank you. Well I’ve been a graphic designer for about 15 years now, so I guess I could say my whole career has been leading up to this moment :joy: but seriously, it’s took me a year to get to where I am now. What I personally like in a design sense and what works for a thumbnail that people click are different things, it’s took a really long time for me to get to a point where I’ve found a middle ground so I’m happy with how they look and how they work for getting clicks. I guess it depends on the video, if something really cool has happened in the video then the concept will come to me pretty quickly and I can create one in 10 - 20 minutes. If it’s been an episode with out any “landmark” events or nothing story related, then I have to work a little harder to find a screenshot that could work. Sometimes I have to collage several together and make a completely new thing (like the New Team Pokemon thumbnail). These can take an hour or longer if I’m not happy with it. Sometimes I still go back and change old thumbnails.
6. For the spotlight I waited until January so that you and SwitchIndieFix could have it together since I always felt you two were great friends who were like minded. You have collaborated with each other a few times now, even dating back to March with that Mario kart video with you two and Rdyplayer4. Why do you feel you and SwitchIndieFix get along so well and what are some of your favourite videos/written reviews of his that you have enjoyed?
Yeah I can’t imagine being where I am without SIF. I’m pretty sure he started commenting on some of my Floor Kids videos and liking tweets about a year ago and I saw that he had a website so I checked it out. I’m glad I did as he was reviewing games that I was interested in on his site and turned out to be a great twitter follow too.
I have a feeling the first article I read of his was one of his sale roundups, I like how he says you can buy X new AAA game for $50 or you could buy these 5 great indie games. I think these are among my favourite pieces he puts out as it really shows his love for Indie games (as well as putting me on to some great games I would not have seen yet). Review wise, I think Last of June and West of Loathing are great reviews but my favourite was definitely Old Man’s Journey. We both love OMJ and I think we bonded quite a bit chatting about that game.
Being content creators that were trying to grow our audience, we really wanted to collaborate and do some fun stuff together. That’s pretty much how the Mario Kart video started, SIF, RdyPlayer4 and myself just wanting to have a game together and then post it up over our 2 channels (Adam didn’t have his youtube back then). I think what made that video great was that Adam made it into more of an interview while we played which added a great dynamic. It’s also fun to note that this was the genesis of the SIF podcast.
Since those videos, I’ve been on several of his podcasts (if life wasn’t so hectic, I’d love to be on more). Adam is a great host and we always have a fun time even when we are having technical difficulties. I always listen to the SIF podcast and he definitely keeps me informed on indies I might have missed otherwise. When he told me about his idea of the Pokemon Gen 8 podcast, I’m pretty sure I said “Dude you already have a podcast! Are you sure you want to make twice as much work for yourself”. :joy: Well... he’s knocked it out of the park with that too, his latest episode with ForrestMinish is a banger and I really think that this podcast has some legs on it and I’m sure will pick up a good audience.
I really think we get on for a few reasons, the first and obvious is that we both have a passion about games and we seem to have a good overlap of the stuff we enjoy (while still being able to suggest stuff to each other that’s outside of our comfort zones). Secondly we both really enjoy content creating and enjoy supporting other creators, I’ve given a whole bunch of people advice on thumbnails and audio stuff, while SIF has been great collaborating on his podcast and give people the opportunity to write guest posts for his blog. Thirdly we just get along, these been several long Fortnite or Warframe sessions where we just chat about life and dumb stuff. Not to mention we chat regularly on Discord. He’s a great guy and I’m glad he watched that Floor Kids video :tada: I think making great friends is one of the best benefits of being a content creator, better than playing games.

SwitchIndieFix Interview

1. What is the origins of your Youtube channel name?
It’s actually a funny story, I originally wanted to call the site The Switch Indie Review because I thought the name would be easy to find in search engines with SEO. However, doing some research I actually found some other smarty pants who set up a website with pretty much the exact same name (Switch Indie Reviews) so decided not to pursue that name!
Eventually I came up with Switch Indie Fix. I knew I wanted ‘Switch Indie’ something as the title because the website would be dedicated to indie games on the Nintendo Switch. I chose Fix because it rhymes with ‘Switch’ and because I wanted the site to be a place where people could come and get their daily ‘fix’ of indie gaming content!
2. What made you want to start writing reviews and than move into video creation?
I’ve always been a creative person and enjoyed writing. At university I started up a book review blog (adam-p-reviews.blogspot.com) where I’d review books and interview authors. I loved doing it but after finishing uni I didn’t have the time to sit around all day reading books (sadly).
During university I also got into video games which led me to following and listening to a podcast run by Kinda Funny. The guys there are extremely positive and basically said, if you want to create something you should just do it.
Jump forward a few years and I’d just got the Switch and was noticing how many indies were coming on to the system. I had a feeling indies were going to be huge on the switch because of Nintendo’s Nindie marketing campaign and because the PS Vita was an indie machine because of its portability- therefore, I thought the Switch would be too.
So bringing all of these things together I decided to jump in and build something from scratch. For my book website I used blogger, which at the time was great. Nevertheless, this time I wanted to experience setting up my own website. I knew I wanted to base it on the Switch and indie games and I pretty much built it from there! Reviews were an obvious thing for me because I’d written so many on my book review site. I love writing about games and think reviews are a great way to interact with the reader, especially if they don’t agree with you!
Video content isn’t on the site yet… I do post the VODs from the Podcast but other than that I don’t produce the video content I really want to create. I unfortunately have an old, broken computer (if you listen to the podcast you’ll know) which unfortunately can’t process video content. However, I do plan on creating it in the future; so watch this space!
3. Do you remember the first review you written? What game was it based on, Looking back on it are you pleased with it?
Yes I do- it was Golf Story by Side Bar Games, arguably the first indie hit on the Nintendo Switch. Yes I’m happy with it, I remember pouring over the review for weeks trying to make it perfect! Looking back I notice how short it is! Maybe I should start writing shorter reviews, it’s less work!
4. Switch Indie Fix is specifically about Indie games on the Switch, what made you want to specialize your content for the Switch?
Erm, I feel like for a lot of content creators the Switch was a new slate in terms of trying to gain an audience. Most people weren’t involved with Nintendo news in the Wii U era (as there wasn’t much) and other platforms like PS4 and Xbox were already saturated with content creators with large audiences.
The Switch was something new, something not many people were creating content about and it was gaining traction, so people were looking for content. Plus, I love my Switch and it quickly became the only console I played games on! Therefore, I thought I was perfectly placed to try and find an audience writing about the Switch and indie games.
5. The Switch Indie Fix podcast has become an integral part of your content, we touched earlier on why you went into video creation but what inspired you specifically to get into making podcasts. What would you say differentiates your podcast from the other one's?
Like I mentioned before, I’m a big Kinda Funny fan so I was inspired by them. When I first set up the website I’d always planned to start a podcast, but thought it might come a little later down the line.
It actually started as an accident. Age of Boredom, Rdy Player 4 and I were playing Mario Kart 8 together as a video for their channels. As I couldn’t record the video, I just recorded the audio (actually I think AoB did it for me). The lads said I should upload it as a podcast to just see what happens- so I did. I uploaded it to Soundcloud and it got quite a few downloads. Not that many (maybe 30) but enough to push me into setting it up as a regular part of my content.
Since then it’s kind of evolved into me talking about the indie news and trying to answer listeners questions. I originally wanted it to be me and a guest hosting but it’s so difficult pinning people down on a weekly basis. So I thought I’d just do it myself, which I quite enjoy.
I think I differentiate the podcast by making the content within it consistent- therefore, you know what you’re getting week in week out. I always start with the news, so it gives listeners a to catch up with the indie gaming scene if they can’t spend all day on Twitter (like I do).
Then I have an editorial segment where I always talk about something I want to talk about. Usually it’s about whatever game I’ve played that week or sometimes I round up a post I’ve made on the website incase people haven’t gotten a chance to read it.
Then finally I have the questions, which I like because it gives listeners a chance to interact with the podcast- it’s always cool to hear your name read out on a podcast! However, I’m always short on questions so if you have any make sure to ask!
Furthermore, I think The SIF Podcast stands out because it’ short and can be listened to on a commute to work, or whilst in the gym. I think it’s important because I live a busy life and know that if a podcast is 2 hours long, I’m never going to finish it. I want The SIF Podcast to be convenient for people to listen to and of course be fun, informative and entertaining!
6. For the spotlight I waited until January so that you and Ageofbordom could have it together since I always felt you two were great friends who were like minded. You have collaborated with each a few times now, even dating back to March with that mario kart video with you two and Rdyplayer4. Why do you feel you and AOB get along so well and what are some of your favourite videos of his that you have enjoyed?
Yeah he’s the first other content creator I really got to know through SIF. I can’t remember exactly how we started talking, but I think I was looking for a review of Floor Kids at the start of last year. When I typed them into youtube all the obvious sites came up (IGN, Gamespot Etc) but as I scrolled down I noticed his amazing thumbnail (which he still makes today and keeps winning the Nintentube comp!). I watched the video, thought it was a perfect review video and followed him on Twitter. And the rest, they say is history.
I don’t know why we get on so well. I think we both share the passion for Nintendo Switch, indie games and for making the best content we can. I can’t tell you the amount of times AoB has helped me out. Whether it’s recording a podcast episode, hooking me up with a contact or just giving me tech advice; the guy has been so supportive of me and SIF and I want to thank him for that! I think he’s just a likeable guy and I think it’s cool that we’re both going through this experience together and growing our reach together.
Honestly, I still think his Floor Kids LP is great, as well as his play through of Old Man’s Journey. I’ve also gotten very nostalgic watching him play through Pokemon Let’s Go blind recently and I’m looking forward to watching his Battle Chef Brigade series when he’s done editing it!

Question regarding the Fortnite Battlepass and game sharing on PS4.

My dad and I both have our own PS4 systems and we both enjoy playing Fortnite BR. My PSN account pays for PS Plus with family sharing working to allow his PSN account to work properly online as well(without paying for PS Plus on his account). I decided today to get us the Battle Pass since we play so much, and got it on my account since my account handles all purchases (my account is activated as the primary user on his system, so everything I’ve bought, and will buy, he can use for free; but if he were to buy something on his account, I wouldn’t be able to use it on that system). So, like every other purchase I’ve made on this PlayStation and on my account, I expected this to work, but apparently it doesn’t.
The Battlepass works fine on my PSN account, the account I used to purchase it. But, anytime I try to switch to my father’s account, it goes away. This is the first thing I’ve purchased on PS4 that doesn’t allow multiple accounts to share in the purchase. I came on here to ask if anyone else is having this problem, but I’m starting to believe that this is intentional by Epic Games in order to make sure every possible account is paying money for their DLC, which is kind of disappointing since I just wanted to give us some skins to play with on the game. I saw in some places that by using an Epic Games account you might be able to do it, but I’m trying to avoid that since linking an Epic Games account to a PS4 essentially prohibits it from working on any other console. So right now I’m just wondering if there’s any other possible way to share purchases. Thanks.
