Hey all, I want to share my thoughts on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 since I was apprehensive about purchasing the phone. There were a lot of unknowns for me since I have never bought a Chinese phone, let alone one that is not officially supported by my carrier (Verizon) or officially sold in my country (United States). All of the vendors of this phone also say it is GSM only, so I wasn't convinced it would work on Verizon which is CDMA until a few Reddit and XDA posts popped up with people who just took the leap. Thank you to those brave souls lol. A little background, I am coming from a stock rooted LG V30, and will be making a lot of comparisons to it in this review. I have never owned another brand of smartphone, but have significant experience using the Pixel 1 and 2, and Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 from family members. I’m not going to get into specs or anything, if you want to know these they can be found with a quick Google. I have also only had this phone for 5 days, I am writing this mainly for some friends who are interested in the purchasing it and don’t have a ton of time to wait so keep that in mind. I am not someone who reviews tech for a living, nor do I often write things like this so I apologize if it's not all-encompassing or flows completely well. There are plenty of reviews by official sites and companies you can look up if that's what you're looking for. Before I begin I want to clarify I have no affiliations or sponsorships from any companies I mention in this review and therefor will not be posting links, but I can PM anyone links who is interested in using the same channels that I did. Also, this is NOT an objective review. I am basing the following judgments on my own opinions and experiences with [primarily] LG flagship smartphones. You are welcome to agree or disagree with anything below, and I am happy to discuss my opinions in the comments. Setup: · Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 Global Edition (6 GB RAM, 128 GB storage) · MIUI Global 10.2.2 stable based on Android 9.0 Pie · Verizon Wireless, USA QUICK NOTE: The ONLY version of the Mi Mix 3 that is truly global (global hardware + global software installed) is the 6GB RAM, 128GB on-board memory version. Any site that says otherwise either unlocked the bootloader and flashed the global software on top of the Chinese hardware, or is still running the Chinese software on the Chinese hardware. This can cause issues when re-locking the bootloader after flashing a different ROM, so buy these at your own risk. Unboxing – EU charger, only one cord I bought the global Mi Mix 3 from an eBay seller in Florida for a total of $545 USD. It only took 2 days to get to Pittsburgh (using the normal shipping option) which was way faster than I anticipated. The phone came in the original global packaging (I think it was made for the European market?), and came with a 10W wireless charging pad (which charges very fast for wireless charging), a USB-A to USB-C cable, a European power brick, a USB-C to Aux adapter, a SIM card tray tool, and a thin plastic case. That’s it. Which is fine, but the Chinese model also comes with a simple case, and a USB-C to Aux adapter since the phone has no headphone jack. The case I didn’t need, but the aux adapter certainly would’ve been nice. Thank you to all those in the comments who pointed this out, but the square on the bottom layer that holds the wireless charger is also a box, containing the case, SIM tool, and USB-C Aux adapter. Somehow missed that originally lol. I also just wound up using my LG V30 charging brick since it can output the same amount of power and has US prongs on it, and the one that came in the box had the circular European prongs. The weirdest thing missing from the box in my opinion was the SIM card tool. Luckily I had one from my LG V30 but if I didn’t already have one I would’ve had to buy one just to use the phone. Just be aware of that. Aesthetics - Build quality, design, screen, slider wobble, slider click, fingerprints Let’s get the most obvious out of the way first, the phone is gorgeous. The global version only comes in black and blue to my knowledge, and I got the black one. The ceramic casing looks and feels premium, and I was surprised at how much more premium it felt than my all-glass LG V30. The Mi Mix 3 is both dense, and thick. It is definitely a large device, not overly so, but it felt significantly heavier than the V30. I love the power button on the side, as it allows me to wake and lock the phone without picking it up off of a surface. The camera bump is noticeable when typing while the phone is lying flat because it is in the top corner the phone wobbles back and forth a bit. Speaking of wobble, there is some present in the sliding module. I read a bunch of reviews before buying that the front part of the phone wobbles, and it does. That being said, I only noticed it because I had read those reviews and specifically tried to make it wobble, I haven’t actually felt the wobble in day-to-day use. It isn’t a make-or-break wobble, it’s very slight and I don’t think it will be an issue in the future but only time will tell on that. The slider actually feels incredible, and the click it makes when moving back and forth is oh so satisfying. It can be programmed to do a bunch of different functions, including opening any app, but I personally liked it most when programmed to do nothing since opening the tools menu when I’m trying to take a Snapchat got annoying pretty quick. The slider does get dust in it very easily, and when sliding down the screen to reveal the front-facing cameras I often found a bunch of dust all over it. Not a deal breaker, but certainly a nuisance. This phone was not made for people who spend significant amounts of time roughing it in the outdoors or in environments with lots of small particles. The last purely aesthetic aspect I want to cover is the screen. I don’t think anyone will be surprised to hear that the Samsung AMOLED panel on the Mi Mix 3 is beautiful, and I honestly may prefer this 1080p Samsung AMOLED panel to the 2k pOLED panel on the LG V30. There is great contrast and the colors pop without being overly saturated like some Samsung phones have been recently. The minuscule bezels only make the screen stand out more, and it is truly a gorgeous phone. I changed the Smallest Width setting in the developer options from the default of 392 to 462 and text looks significantly more crisp. This can often cause weird formatting issues, but the only thing I have noticed after a few days is the text in Snapchat chats is thicker on some parts of certain letters than others. Otherwise it looks fantastic. My only other complaint about the Mix 3’s design is the lack of waterproofing. My V30 was IP68 rated and while I never actually ran into a situation where the waterproofing saved my phone, it would give me some piece of mind to know I wouldn’t have to worry about it. Battery The Mix 3 comes with a 3200 mAh lithium-ion battery. This is certainly not very large for a 6.4 inch screen, and the 6.3 inch V30 came with 3300 mAh. This definitely concerned me on paper, but so far I have had no issues getting 20+ hours of battery life with with 5-7 hours of Screen-on-Time with moderate use. To clarify, I am not a heavy social media user. I occasionally check Facebook using the mobile site in Chrome (I uninstalled the app), and I don’t have a Twitter or Instagram. I also have notifications for Snapchat and FB Messenger turned off and only check it a few times a day. That definitely improves my battery life, but like I said I have had no issues getting through the entirety of a day browsing Reddit, Google feeds, Youtube, and texting pretty much all day. That also includes 3ish hours of streaming Spotify (without music downloaded offline) at high quality over LTE to Bluetooth headphones. MIUI – speed, multitasking, animations, MIUI battery saving optimization issues, dark mode theme On the software side, MIUI (Xiaomi’s android skin) certainly takes some getting used to. Finding a setting for a given feature is not as intuitive as it should be, especially coming from LG’s skin. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I really enjoy LG’s UX. They added a bunch of useful features and tools and have steadily worked towards speed and optimization, especially with the Oreo update. MIUI however, is on another tier of smoothness. The animations and speed feel like liquid and I haven’t felt this kind of fluidity outside of stock android running on a Pixel. There are many weird things about it though that need to be addressed, and I am going to make an entire section for notifications since those are their own beast. MIUI battery saving optimizations are infamous for breaking functionality, and I can now see why. Apps that you need to run all the time (such as Fluid Navigation Gestures which I use instead of the stock MIUI gestures) need to be individually excluded from the “optimizations” or else they will be killed constantly. Haven’t had any issues after excluding them but it is annoying that these “optimizations” are on by default and must be turned off individually for each app. I use Nova Launcher instead of the stock MIUI launcher, but that’s because I prefer Nova to any launcher. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong with the stock launcher in the brief time I used it aside from the lack of an app drawer, I just love the customization and speed that Nova offers and don’t have much interest in any other launcher until I find one that can beat it. There is no native dark mode, but that is apparently coming with updates soon. MIUI has a built in theme engine however and the black stock V10 theme I am using works in the majority of MIUI apps just fine. There is nothing wrong with the default white theme but I have been using a black theme on my LG V30 recently and vastly prefer it to the bright white, especially late at night. The multitasking is handled better than stock android in my opinion. MIUI’s app switcher pane shows two apps side-by-side and scrolls vertically, and it is much easier to view all the apps you have open this way. Another weird quirk about MIUI though is that the ”clear all apps” button in the app switcher seems to clear ALL system memory, as my Galaxy Watch and Bluetooth headphones momentarily disconnect after hitting the button. Kind of an odd implementation choice, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Notifications – not shown on AoD, LED light only blinks before screen is turned on, can’t expand notifications on lockscreen, notifications don’t stay on lockscreen after phone is unlocked, seem to work for all apps, notification settings are intricate and confusing, turned off by default Now for my biggest issue with MIUI so far, the notifications. I’m not sure what the MIUI design team was thinking when they got to this aspect of the device, but it doesn’t make a ton of sense. By default, all apps are denied any kind of notification access. This is even more annoying than the MIUI optimizations since SO many apps need notification access to be useful, so you have to go through each one and turn on notifications. Apps are also denied lockscreen access by default which kind of makes sense, but also blocks being able to see notifications so it’s just another annoyance. After turning the notifications on in the settings however, all notifications are received normally. I know not receiving notifications has been a huge issue for MIUI in the past, but the 10.2.x updates seem to have fixed that issue. The lockscreen has a few other quirks to it. For one, the Always on Display (called Ambient Display here) only shows notifications for some apps. Textra, my primary texting app, does not have any kind of representation on the AoD. Messenger however, has the Messenger icon when a message is waiting. Go figure. It’s possible this is an issue with the way each app implements notifications, since I wasn’t able to see icons for Snapchat either. Thankfully Xiaomi included an LED so I can still tell when a message is waiting for me in Textra/Snapchat. The next problem with the AoD is that once the display is turned on, even if the phone is not unlocked and the notification is still sitting on the lockscreen, the LED stops blinking. I didn’t clear or respond to the notification, so why would it stop notifying me that there is one? There is a similar issue once the phone is unlocked, in that notifications that are sitting in the status bar in the top left corner of the screen are no longer displayed on the lockscreen after locking the phone again. Again, regardless of whether or not they have been interacted with. Notifications definitely need work, but this isn’t a deal breaker for me since the status bar notifications persist so I can still see things are waiting for me once the phone is unlocked. It’s just very different from the LG V30 lockscreen which had so much more consistency in this area. The last issue I have with the lockscreen notifications is there doesn’t appear to be a way to expand notifications at all. If a text message goes on to a second line, I need to unlock the phone to view the rest of it. Notifications can be expanded normally while the phone is unlocked, so it seems like the Xiaomi software team just forgot about the lockscreen aspect. Cameras – viewfinder speed, Gcam apk, snapchat issue I haven’t extensively tested the cameras on the Mi Mix 3 but from the little shooting I did, I was impressed. The HDR is impressive and shots are full of color and clarity. I’m far from a camera expert but I didn’t have any complaints here. The image in the viewfinder was the quickest I’ve ever seen, there was no perceivable lag whatsoever. I haven’t played around with the numerous camera modes MIUI offers, but the portrait mode and 2x optical zoom both worked as expected, albeit with some noise when using the 2x zoom in lower light. The front cameras also work admirably, with portrait mode consistently being able to effectively blur the background behind me thanks to the 2 MP secondary telephoto lens. I installed a compatible version of the Google Camera from XDA which I will link here, and got even better results than the stock MIUI camera. While low-light photos with stock were actually great, GCam still did it better. It’s great to have both options. The only issue I’ve noticed with the camera so far is in Snapchat. When taking a picture with the rear camera it looks far more zoomed in before the picture is taken (possibly defaulting to the 2x zoom setting?) and once the picture is actually taken it jumps backwards and includes much more of the surrounding area. That being said, this is not a camera review so I have not done extensive testing. The pictures I did take looked fantastic, significantly better than my V30 in every way, but there is much more experimenting to be done here. I haven’t used the video recording at all, but there are dozens of objective reviews by people much more experienced than me that can give you the lowdown on the cameras if that’s what you’re looking for. US/Verizon compatibility – LTE, VoLTE, MMS inconsistency My biggest concern before buying the Mi Mix 3 was whether or not it would work with Verizon. Yes, I could switch to another carrier, but I like the unlimited plan I have now that I share with my family since it is at a significantly lower cost than getting my own plan. Initially after release there was no concrete information on whether or not the Mix 3 supported one of Verizon’s main LTE bands (band 13), some sites said the global variant would and others said it wouldn’t. Thankfully, Xiaomi eventually updated their own website to show that bands 2, 4, and 13 were all supported so in theory there should be no compatibility issues with Verizon as far as LTE was concerned. Luckily this seems to be the case since I have had superb data connection everywhere in Pittsburgh, significantly better than my V30 had. I haven’t run any actual speed tests because I personally don’t care about the actual numbers, but everything feels faster than before and the few areas along the bus route where I had poor reception I no longer do. Voice over LTE is not enabled out of the box but can be enabled easily with a dialer code that disables the auto-carrier check. The details of which are discussed on this XDA post, but all that needs to be done is dial *#*#86583#*#\* and the VoLTE icon should appear in right of the status bar. The only other Verizon compatibility issue I had was with MMS messaging. By default, Verizon doesn’t particularly like allowing MMS to function normally on unlocked or not-officially supported phones. For clarification, sending group text messages and pictures messages usually works, but pictures cannot be sent or received that are any larger than 30kb (unless you use the Verizon Messages+ app which in my opinion is trash). That’s tiny. It will compress pictures so heavily that you can’t even tell what they are and I had this issue on my unlocked LG V30 as well. I was able to get around this limitation using a combination of Textra 3.50 (again, not promoting the use of Textra for any reason other than their support team is amazing and worked with me to resolve this issue) and adding a custom APN on the Mix 3, the screenshots and settings for which can be found in my XDA post here. This is not ideal, since Textra can never be updated and I am limited to using that app (although it happens to be my favorite texting app anyway), but it works and I haven’t had any issues since initially setting it up. Other than what’s been mentioned above, using the Mix 3 on Verizon has been normal. I’m kind of surprised at how easy it’s been since Verizon makes such a big deal about only supporting certain devices, but if you’re willing to wrestle with the MMS settings a bit (or if you don’t use MMS at all and only use internet-based messengers) it works well. Modification – unlocking bootloader, root availability, mod community The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 development community is amazing. There are a bunch of devs working on TWRP, root, custom ROMs, Viper, and a host of other mods and features because Xiaomi officially supports bootloader unlocking. This is more than I could have asked for coming from the LG V30 XDA forum where developers have all but given up on the device. No fault of their own, but LG is much more strict about allowing bootloader unlocking. If this is something that interests you at all, you’ll have plenty of options to toy around with and a passionate, active community to participate in. I am currently waiting to unlock my bootloader since Xiaomi has a 72 hour lockout period from the time you register the phone with your Mi account and request the unlock before you can actually do it. But, as soon as the lockout is over I will be unlocking the bootloader, installing TWRP, rooting with Magisk, and possibly installing a custom ROM or two such as Pixel Experience or Resurrection Remix. I’ve always enjoyed root privileges and for me, the booming mod community surrounding the Mix 3 is a huge plus. TL;DR For those of you who don’t want to read the above novel, here’s a pros and cons list. Please keep in mind that these are my personal pros and cons, based off my own experiences with mobile devices. They are not an attempt to get you to buy, or not to buy, this phone. Personally, I absolutely love this device and hopefully this review helped clarify some things for US users (more specifically Verizon) who may have seen conflicting information out there.

I gave Android an honest go at becoming my daily driver over the past 2 weeks, purchasing a Nokia 6.1 with PURE Vanilla Android. My thought process was that my opinion of Android was skewed because I had old hardware and software layers on top of the OS which was bogging down my experience. I installed ONLY Play Store apps that were very well known. Cloud Player, YouTube Music, OneDrive, Edge, Weather Apps, etc. No sideloading of any APKs or anything. The phone worked great for the first few days,but as I began to bog it down with more and more apps the problems started to occur. PROBLEM #1: The screen takes forever to boot AFTER entering my PIN. When I got the phone I installed a few apps with some handy widgets, mostly battery + weather ones. Nothing too fancy, and there's only a total of 3 widgets on my phone. The screen takes literally 30 seconds before I can even see my icons. I don't have a problem with the widgets downloading in background if they need to, but COME THE F**K ON! This is bull. PROBLEM #2: Volume controls just stop working. I'm playing music. Everything's great. LA LA LA. Ok let me switch songs. OK sweet. Now lets turn up the vol.. CLICK. WAIT, WTF? Where's my volume control (Media/Ringtone/etc). NOPE NOTHING! It just decides I'm not going to load. THE ONLY way I can get the volume control back is via a reboot. PROBLEM #3: Apps CRASH at RANDOM unpredictable times. "Unfortunately app has stopped" "Unfortunately app has stopped" "Unfortunately app has stopped" WHAT. THE. FREAKING HECK. I mean I love that Android has so many apps, which is why I bought the Nokia 6.1 in the first place. Launcher 10 is AWESOME. I like its customization over Windows even. But if I can't consistently use this product without having to worry WHEN it will crash. It's not worth it. It's that simple. I'd rather have 3 apps that work, then 300 that work "OK". I'm a simple man. I don't need snapchat, or a banking app (I DRIVE TO MY BANK), or Pokemon GO, etc. Problem #4: Oh YouTube where for art thou? You drank the Kool Aid, Android. Sure, there's Youtube vanced which works well, but lacks offline downloading, and sure you can get SEPARATE apps that let you download/rip youtube videos, but there's literally ZERO options for MyTube/Awesome Tube. Nothing will ever surpass the greatness that is MyTube. Google does not allow a MyTube equilvent due to fact they want users to play for YouTube premium features like background downloading/background audio. Yes there's side projects like xposed module that do these tasks, but you can't have a simple UI that does it all like MyTube. NOTHING comes close. Probably 70% of what I do on my phone is literally Youtube. Without a rich YouTube experience, the phone is just CRAP in my opinion. Problem #5: Forcing FOCUSED INBOX down your throat. On my Windows Phone I could have a tile for my personal Outlook (outlook.com) account and separate tile for my Exchange ActiveSync work email. When I download the Outlook App for Android it forces you to COMBINE the emails together. You can't pin them separately. I wouldn't mind switching between the two in the app itself, but if you close outlook and reload it, it forces the view back to "ALL ACCOUNTS". F**K your blended accounts BS. I don't want that. Ok I'll download other 3rd party apps like Blue Mail, Edison mail, Nine, etc. Some of them work OK, and I can separate the email, ok let me configure my swipe options so I can archive my email...WAIT WTF? It doesn't do it? COME THE F ON man. Alright let me try another one. WHAT THE? its just spinning with a refresh circle indefinitely (I'm looking at you Blue Mail). WOW. SERIOUSLY. I am about to punch a baby in its face. Keep in mind I am testing all of this ON STOCK Android Oreo 8.1 with latest security updates my Nokia 6.1, using the STOCK launcher. Nothing fancy. I literally just tested the "Pure" android experience. To be completely honest thus far, I AM NOT happy. Back on my trusty HP Elite X3 once again. Banana if you are reading this...SORRY my friend, I really gave Android a shot, but I just don't like it. There's a lot of good things about Android, but usability is a HUGE issue. THERE MAY BE A VERY VERY VERY SMALL SLIMMER OF HOPE ON THE HORIZON And I'm not talking Surface Phone. I'm talking Android app port (i.e Astoria version 2). Software developer MechDome is working on porting over Android to UWP WIN32 chips now. They plan to backwords enginner FULLY UWP which includes ARM later on. Thier goal is to eliminate a monolithic approach to apps. Pure cross-platform compatibility. Any app on any phone. I'm rooting for them to pull it off. Keep in mind that JUST legacy Windows Phone is dead. UWP is still alive, which doesn't give them 100% reason to quit on project YET.
