Everything You Need to Know About the New Apple MacBook

One more thing. That was the name of Apple’s latest event. And, following the recent releases of the iPhone 12 and a new batch of iPads, there was only one product line it was going to be all about: the 2020 MacBook.
In case you missed it, in early November Apple announced a new range of Mac computers with a big difference: the latest machines are the first to move away from a reliance on Intel’s processors. Instead, the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini all come with Apple’s first desktop ARM chip: the M1.

M1: A Breakthrough, Not an Upgrade?

Apple’s new M1 processor is similar to the A14 chip at the center of the latest iPhone 12 and iPad Air. The main difference is that it has two extra cores in the CPU and double the core count in the GPU. The eight CPU cores are smartly split between high performance and simple tasks, which should mean the M1 chip offers better performance per watt than similar devices on the market.
In fact, Apple has said the M1 can deliver the peak performance of a PC laptop while using just a quarter of the power!
That’s a big deal. So much so that Apple is calling the M1 a breakthrough, not an upgrade.
But what does this new chip mean for Apple fans?
Previously, Macs relied upon multiple chips to deliver features ranging from security to processing to memory. The M1 combines everything into a single chip – with significant benefits for efficiency and performance.
The M1 is also the first personal computer chip built using 5‑nanometer process technology, boosting performance by integrating 11.8 billion transistors on the silicon die – an increase of around 40% compared to the previous A13 processor in the old MacBook Air.
In other words, if you’re looking for a computer to handle media-intensive tasks without overheating and/or needing to be constantly plugged in, the M1-powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.
The M1 offers a huge increase in graphics performance alongside its low power consumption. Apple has gone as far as to say the GPU in the M1 is the most advanced graphics processor they’ve ever built, with the world’s fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer. That’s a big claim but early signs are that it’s an accurate one!

macOS 11 Big Sur

Before we get into the details of the new MacBook models, let’s look at what they have in common.
Aside from the new M1 chip, the biggest thing to note is that all the new Macs will run macOS 11 Big Sur. That means you’ll be able to install and use iPhone and iPad apps on the Mac for the first time. A welcome addition and perhaps a sign that the boundaries between phone and computer are beginning to blur.
All of Apple’s preloaded apps and professional programs, including Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, have been optimised to work with the new M1 chip.
The big question is what this means moving forward. Now that Apple is making its own processors and launching macOS 11 Big Sur, you can expect an even more seamless experience across your Macbook, iPhone and Apple Watch.

A Closer Look at the New MacBook Models

The new MacBook Air doesn’t look that different from the previous model. But that’s because most of the action is going on under the surface. With the new M1 chip, the Air is apparently 3.5x faster in terms of CPU performance and offers 5x the graphics performance when compared to the previous generation.
Let’s put that into perspective for a second. According to Apple’s launch event, the MacBook Air is faster than 98% of the PC laptops sold last year.
And, believe it or not, it doesn’t have a fan. Apple says the M1 chip takes care of that.
As you’d expect with a device that runs cool and performs more efficiently, the battery life has improved too. Apple says the MacBook Air offers 15 hours of web browsing and 18 hours of video. Its built-in 49.9‑watt‑hour lithium‑polymer battery charges with a 30W USB-C power adapter.
Price: The MacBook Air is available from $999.
Just like the new MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is very similar to the previous generation in terms of looks. But looks can be deceiving. Again, it’s all about what’s under the hood.
Thanks to the M1 the Pro is 2.8x faster than the previous model and offers (yes, this is true) 20 hours of video playback – the longest battery life ever on a Mac.
The MacBook Pro also features better internal microphones and an improved webcam – perfect for all your video calls and business meetings. However, there are only two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, which is half what you got with the previous version.
And, just in case you were wondering, the new 13-inch Pro does have a fan. Apple says it’s to ensure peak performance over time. The Pro comes with a 58.2-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery, about 17% larger than the Macbook Air battery, and requires a higher 61W charging power.
Price: $1,299.
The Mac mini is pretty much the same again, except for the M1, which provides 3x faster performance and up to 6x faster graphics. With these big performance improvements, it looks like Apple is set to do well in the BYODKM (Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard, and Mouse) market.
Price: Starting at $699.

The Perfect Tool for Creatives?

In theory, the Mac processor upgrade is great news for designers, photographers, cinematographers, and other creative professionals who prioritize image processing capabilities and the ability to work with media above all else.
These look like breakthrough steps for power users that are tired of juggling battery life and performance limitations.
And better still, beyond the power and performance is the ease of use you’d expect from Apple. Like with iPads and iPhones, the new Macs will be able to instantly wake from sleep mode and get straight into high-performance tasks, whether you want to do some 3D design work or 4K video editing!
But power and performance is only half of the story. For a truly integrated office setup, you need to be able to seamlessly move media from one device to another.
On the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, the port selection includes two Thunderbolt 3 ports, supporting USB-4, and a headphone jack. You’re going to need some accessories if you want to make the most of your new tech.
We recommend an all in one, like the UGREEN X-Kit, an ergonomic laptop Hub-Stand packed with built-in connectivity, including a Type-C port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, 4K HDMI and SD/TF card slots.
And as a laptop stand, there are 4 adjustable angles(15°/20°/30°/33°) for connecting freely with peripherals, reading on laptop and easy typing. The X-Kit is also a solid bet if you’re concerned about the lack of a fan on your new MacBook. Sure, Apple says the new models are thermally efficient, but heat dissipation is still a factor. With the X-Kit you get better heat dissipation and enhanced productivity at the same time.
The X-Kit is being crowdfunded on indiegogo. Sign up to the pre-launch exclusives here and embrace a more universal way of working. The first 300 backers can get a huge 55% off and get the X-Kit at only $44!

The Blessing of Better Battery Life

Plenty of Apple fans use their MacBooks for work, play, and everything in between. This means power efficiency and battery life are one of the first metrics buyers look at.
The advances in the new MacBooks’ battery life are impressive. But it’s not actually the case that the new batteries are loads better. In fact, the capacity hasn’t changed from the previous generation. It’s just that the new M1 processor is handling all of your tasks with ease and barely breaking a sweat.
Having said that, you will still need to plug in and charge up at some point! If you want a fast charger that’ll work with your Mac and the rest of your devices, look no further than the UGREEN 65w GaN charger — With 3C1A fast charging ports and the most advanced GaN semiconductor technology, can provide you with the best charging experience. Just make sure you’ve got the cables you need!

Unified Memory for Smooth Video and Gaming

Another knock-on effect of the new M1 chip is that the latest MacBooks come with up to 16GB of unified memory. That means apps can share data between the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine with ease, cutting loading times and making working with video and gaming more responsive.
But let’s be honest, gaming and intensive video editing are best done on an external monitor. We recommend connecting your new MacBook to a high-performance screen for a more immersive experience. For that, you’ll need a compatible HDMI cable capable of bringing your media and games to life – preferably in glorious 8K!

New MacBook Features You Might Have Missed

Truth be told, the 2020 MacBooks are pretty much identical to last year’s models in terms of design. Despite the huge development in power and performance, there’s still no cellular option, no touchscreen features (even though it would make sense with the new macOS 11 Big Sur), and no Face ID.
Apple is taking a cautious approach, focusing efforts on the huge change in chip architecture before launching shiny new features on future models. If you do want to make your new MacBook stand out from the crowd, why not invest in a stylish MacBook case to keep it secure and scratch-free while you’re on the go?

A Glimpse at the Future of Computing

The new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini offer a glimpse at the future of computing. Apple’s adventure into new chip architecture is only just beginning – but already this launch has achieved staggering upgrades in battery life and performance.
The latest MacBooks are powerful enough to be hubs for whatever computing tasks you want to take on, from video editing and design to conference calls and machine learning. Apple is leading the trend of integrated computing, where one device ties together all of your other ones. But you’ll need a bit of help to turn your new MacBook into the perfect portable office tool.

    1. An idea on what the Minos Titan might look like. This was a small collaboration between me and a talented artist by the name of Shibu. I am currently on a mad-hunt to be able to play this game that no longer works!

The game has a really stupid name called "Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine of Diamonds & Gold Treasure Free for iPad and iPhone." It should be called "Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine". It was last updated 7 years ago and had fallen into irrelevancy. Almost no one will remember it but to me it is actually super legendary.
Basically the game only functions on Iphones and Ipads and only worked past Iphone 6. I owned an Ipod 5 and I later switched to an Iphone 6. This means for a time I was able to play the game for a time likely from 2012 to 2015-ish. Those details don't matter. The problem is that it stopped working after IOS updated to a new version in 2016 and the devs wouldn't update. I sent 2 emails to the devs but they never responded. Now they're working on like tech stuff so they're long gone by now.
I still have the Ipod 5 but I had to trade in my Iphone 6 for a newer phone. I was able to reinstall the game on the Ipod touch but it's really unstable and I don't think it's a good option. It plays slowly and it just lacks RAM. That's why it worked on the Iphone 6. But the catch 22 is that the Iphone 6 updated can't play the game.
I've got two leads. I have to buy an Iphone 6 and I need it to be on an older version. I think I'll be able to revert it to an older version if I can't find an older version one. My best luck is that I find one that wasn't updated.
Just to reiterate, I want to play the game but I haven't found emulators or anything that could help me. My only option seems to be obtaining an Iphone 6. Anybody have any ideas? Anybody know what game I'm talking about? Am I overthinking this?

Here's another post relating to the prospectors coming from the same guy. This is my current documentation of all the info that I've collected so far

Official Name: "Prospectors - Nature's Slot Machine of Diamonds & Gold Treasure Free for iPad and iPhone"
Improved Name: "Prospectors of Diamonds & Gold"

Notes about renaming the game: First of all, the name was too long. It needed something more concise. I think the main developer is Chinese and in China their naming scheme tends to be long, but that's conjecture. Anyway, it needed to be shorter, so first I took off the last part: "Free for iPad and iPhone." This was the easiest. Sure it is free and I'll probably keep it free but it doesn't need that said. People will notice pretty easily instead of reading the entire name. I also removed the "iPad and iPhone" part since I might release it to google play or something. Next was easy but complicated. Remove the "slot machine" part including "nature" since it refers to the slot machine noun. This is because of how it's associated with cheap casino apps that are carbon copies of each other and just want to make some easy money. "Nature" was also removed since there was no place to put it. So then we had "Prospectors - of Diamonds & Gold Treasure." This is alright but it needed cleaning up. I wanted to keep the dash but I couldn't find a good mix of the words. One idea was "Prospectors - Diamond & Gold Treasure" but it was too weird. There were more examples which added or removed "treasure" but I settled with removing it just for a concise name. This mean I had to decide what to do with the dash. It looks good, but there's no good way to use it except for it's original name, so I decided I had to chuck it. This meant I would bring back the "of". The settled on name was "Prospectors of Diamonds & Gold". It's concise, it has a good naming scheme, and it explains the game well enough. I want to keep everything the same for the game, but this I had to change at least for marketability.

Important Facts:
1) Only works on 32-bit IOS systems (before 11 and maybe conjecture) but may be unstable on IOS 9 and 10 systems because no updates.
2) Anything older than iPod 5, iPhone 5s, and iPad 1 won't work based on the quote report by devs.
3) Devices listed on fact 2 don't work because they lack processing power to run a 3d physics engine (also quotable).
4) I played the game after it was updated on my iPhone 6 so it should work under the original circumstances.
5) Almost all of my info is running off of what the devs said in 2015.
6) All directions point towards the iPad 3 being able to play the game.

This is a monologue and not schizophrenia.

Opinions:
1) It may be that the game won't work for IOS 9 devices.
Rebuttal: It was stated that my iPod won't work because it lacks the processing power.
question: Why would the app fail to work after a simple transition from tutorial to menu?
conjecture: This is possible evidence to it being gutted.
rebuttal 2: the game worked after it was updated on my iPhone 6 (fact 4)
question: Why would they gut the game?
rebuttal: It is unknown why, but it is a possible reason regardless and I know too little to prove or disprove.
condition: If I reach the correct conditions for the game to work and it doesn't work, it was gutted. If I get a message from a dev saying it was gutted, it was gutted.
If it works, it wasn't gutted. If a dev says it was left to expire, it wasn't gutted but abandoned.

2) This is a waste of time or this will turn out to have been a waste of time.
rebuttal: It's a waste of time once I know if it's impossible. Until then, keep going.
question: What about the game itself? Will I really enjoy it?
rebuttal: Maybe, but I won't know that until I play it. Also I might as well try this out just for the fun of trying it out. I can also code it, but if that isn't an option, then it's a waste.
condition: It the game won't work no matter what, it was a waste of time. If I play it and it sucks (ignoring capabilities of device), it's a fair waste of time. If it works and I enjoy it, it wasn't a waste of time.

3) The iPhone 5s should be able to run the game when compared to the iPhone 6.
rebuttal: The devs said in 2015 that it won't
question: why? They have the same RAM!
answer: It might be because that it's a 64 bit device but even I can't deny their similar RAMs. I'm gonna bank on 64 bit incompatibility.
rebuttal: What, are they looking forward into the future where it would become incompatible? Why not just say, "we aren't going to update it, fuck you!"
problem: There is no logical explanation, given current info, why the 5s couldn't run the game when it had enough ram.
speculation: The devs didn't double check the specs of the 5s and assumed it was defunct, not noticing it's sufficient ram. The fact that it was 64-bit may be notable but is currently irrelevant.
rebuttal: the 5s was specifically named the 5s so they specifically picked it. Also, the 5s is a 64 bit and is IOS 12 now, so it's screwed either way.
rebuttal: figuring out why the iPhone 5s wont work is pivotal to finding the best plan of purchase.
speculation: if the 5s wasn't 64 bit, it probably would've ran the game.
rebuttal: none. It is way too much like the iPhone 6 but it runs into the same problems as the iPhone 6.
Condition: The iPhone 5s could run the game as much as the iPhone 6. Good specs, too new. The devs probably mulled over if the 5s would work and just guessed it wouldn't because it was a gen 5.

(wait until iPad 3 is bought and checked) 4) There may still be at least a few players.
evidence: At the moment (may change), it is highly likely that the iPad 3 could still run the game
rebuttal: You aren't entirely sure until you buy it and play past the tutorial.
Agreement: Yep, it'll be a mystery until I check the iPad 3, so let's wait until then

I've checked and the devs only claimed that the RAM was the problem on the older devices, but I'll leave the GPU and CPU specs for now.
(App store report says "Prospectors won't run on iPhone 5S or older, iPod Touch 5 or older, and iPad 1.")
(Attaining specific ram speeds seems annoying to impossible. Best to ignore the old ones and just say new gen is the determining factor.)
("Note: unfortunately, the game won't run on lower memory 512MB RAM devices including iPods, iPhone 5S and older, and iPad 1 - sorry we tried")
iPhone and iPad RAM specs:

iPod touch 5: (listed as defunct)

PowerVR SGX543MP2

iPhone 6: (defunct due to being new)

PowerVR Series 6 GX6450 (quad-core)

iPad 1: (listed as defunct)
256 MB DDR RAM
1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 (32-bit)
PowerVR SGX535

iPad 2: (defunct due to ram size)
512 MB DDR2 (1066 MHz)
1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 (32-bit)
PowerVR SGX543MP2 (67 MPolygon/s2 GPixel/s fill rate)

iPad 3: (likely best option so far. Only problem is that its ram is 1 gen off from iPhone 6 so it's unknown to a degree. There's some luck that it could only be a problem of size and not speed.)
1 GB LPDDR2
1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 (32-bit)
PowerVR SGX543MP4

iPad 4: (IOS 10, could be unstable, but it would probably run the game better if it works.)
1 GB LPDDR2
1.4 GHz dual core Apple Swift (32-bit)
Quad-core PowerVR SGX554MP4

After checking the specs, the safest option is the iPad 3 with the larger and faster RAM. The important part being that it was discontinued at IOS 9.3.5 so it is likely to work since my iPod 5 could run it at 9.3.5 too (but the iPod lacked the RAM capacity).

How level up in ranked

Guide on levelling up in RANKED Call of Duty : Mobile

This post is aimed to try and help others who like me have been stuck for a while and struggled at one level in RANKED. It also covers some game mechanics and some basics of tactics to help anyone become a more informed player of the game (from someone who has studied them closely).
If I receive positive responses and upvotes then I will look at writing a series of posts on each topic I cover here in brief. I give an example of one tactical gameplay example below and have many more that I can take everyone through if it resonates. Certainly, I have not found any good info out there in a written format, and videos are often short and don’t go into the actual things you need to do as a player. It's fine to watch a stream of a brilliant player, it’s another thing to try and learn to emulate him !
A little history about me and my “journey” in the game:
· I started as an occasional player over Christmas 2019 – playing mainly prop hunt for fun as I had some time on my hands …
· I became more serious in January and started playing Public matches Multi-Player and learnt to use my thumbs and a better HUD layout
· In February I got more serious as I started to improve and could see other players doing things I couldn’t imagine how they did ! Move and jump and shoot, whip weapons in and out, not stop every time they wanted to take a gunfight ….
· In late February I moved to learning 4 finger claw as that seemed to be the way to get better control and this was hard for a few days as I re-learnt how to play, but I was successful and it made my game better
· Since then I have really sweated in RANKED and improved but then I hit a “wall”. I seemed to reach a limit of my skills and could not improve over a number of games. You can see this from the graph of my score and how it changes in RANKED. It looks flat for the first 30 games or so with me hovering up and down around 3600 points. Over many, many games I didn’t manage to increase the score and hence my progress.

Proof of my improvement and the long flat period I also had before I upped my game

· I realized I was stuck and so I then tried all sorts of ideas to improve my game;
All of these approaches actually FAILED to make any sort of impact or improvement. It seemed that all I was doing was trying out new guns, new ideas, and tactics and yet my RANK gameplay didn’t budge. The annoying aspect was that in these same games there was a group of 14-year-old overactive kangaroos who would jump around with DLQ sniper rifles and shoot me at close range without even scoping in.
In fact, anyone reading this will know that when you really get taken apart by a much better team, organized and with roles and all communicating then it’s a VERY unpleasant experience. You tend to look at your teammates in RANKED as being bad, not communicating, not protecting you, not being good enough, etc…
After this, I did some soul searching and took a good, long look at myself and started to capture the data and info on games in a book, along with the things I could do better. So, for example, I had entries around; learn to snipe fast scope, learn to move strafe when firing, learn to drop fire, learn the map positions, learn spawn spots etc…
I also decided to do something radical and I examined ALL of the best YouTubers and how they play and almost without exception they use “6 finger claw” method. I decided I would do this and copy the same approach on an iPad Pro 2020 (which I bought).
I know that someone in the comments will say that; “I managed to reach legendary in just 4 weeks using only a knife and a fork” or another will say “its easy, I reached Master V just using random teammates in RANKED matches and I blew things up with my two left thumbs ! “
This is all fine and I really don’t doubt it happens, however many of us “lesser mortals” are in need of every advantage we can get. I was also clear with myself that my 1/5 contribution in any ranked game was really less than the expected 1/5. If that 1/5 aspect doesn’t make sense to you, let me explain as this is a point well worth understanding.
If you reflect there are 5 players in any normal Multi-Player game and one of them is obviously you. This simple math means your contribution to a game should be (if all else is equal) 1/5 of the overall effort, kills, points, and so forth. In fact, that’s how RANKED scores work, you get scores for being a winner and for contribution to the overall win.
Ideally, we would all make sure that we contribute 1/5, so in a Search & Destroy game if every player kills one other enemy then we will win the game. Keep your mind on this because it's also the same in Team Deathmatch. There are 50 kills needed to win and so if you kill each 10 of the other team then you will win. This is very obvious, however when you take a long hard look at your stats in RANKED and at your gameplay can you say you are killing 10 enemies each TDM? In my case, I wasn’t and I also wasn’t averaging 1 kill in search and destroy each game either.
I have found that it is very easy to fool yourself and think that the fault is all on your teammates (don’t get me wrong as often that are also at fault). It was certainly clear to me that the 1/5 contribution that I made to the game with either kills or objective work was not enough to make a real difference to the WHOLE TEAM winning matches. If you look at the graph you will see depending on my team mix, I would go up then down, up then down, and in reality not really move up at all.
For me, it was obvious that as I wasn’t continuing to rise in the RANKS and I was just going up and down at the same level around 3600 points. Part of my change was to look at how I was directly assisting the team to win and find a way to play smarter. I would try and make my 1/5 of the whole team work harder to get the wins. I give below an example of the sorts of things that I did to get better results. As I say of people find this whole POST useful then I will write a whole series on such tips.
How to win DOMINATION using tactical play
First I will state the obvious in case there any new players reading this and they don’t yet understand how DOMINATION really works. Domination is NOT won through the numbers of kills which you make – this often comes as a shock to some people. In fact, I have often had more kills in our team and yet we lose the game.
It's actually won in this simple way; “You need to hold the flags A & B and/or C for more time than the enemy does”.
You receive points for every second in which you have a flag “capped” that is turned BLUE. A WHITE flag is “uncapped” and nobody gets points and a RED flag the enemy gets points. So simple maths dictates that if you have 2 flags turned BLUE through the game you will win. In fact, if you have a DOUBLE “cap” then you receive POINTS at twice the rate towards the 150 total.
Indeed the boring MATHS is actually interesting here because there is often a special POINT in the game sequence where you CANNOT lose as long as you continue to hold 1 flag. Let's take a look at these numbers and scores to better understand.
Let's say you are on a score of 130 v 100 for the enemy team. Now if the enemy captures B from you, you will still win even though you only now are receiving 1 point for every 2 points the enemy receives. In this example, you are 30 points ahead of the other team and so even though they will now get 2 points for your 1 point (they have 2 flags and you 1 flag) they still won’t be able to win. If they TRIPLE captured flags then that would be a loss, however, that rarely occurs.
Let's look at a worked example of this to see how the score is SO important and being able to know if you need to recapture a flag or not and when. Let’s assume your team has 130 and the enemy has 100 and then they capture B and C flags and you now have A. Below we see how this evolves in-game time.

how you can win even if you only have 1 flag and the enemy team captures 2

Lets take a look at another example and see what happens here;
how you can lose with the enemy getting double points from 2 flags
So as you can see its really important to WATCH the scores and understand how the points are awarded and how a 20 point lead is not enough to comfortably win if you lose a flag.
There is an EASY WAY to always quickly work out if you can WIN from any point in the game with just 1 flag to an enemy 2 flags. Do as follows; deduct your current score from 150 and then double it and add this to the enemy's score, if the result is LESS than 150 then you will win.
Let’s try that with an example, we have 110 points and the enemy has 75 points, and they then double cap. So 150 minus the 110 gives us 40, doubled this gives 80 and when it’s added to the enemy 75 it gives 155. In this case, the enemy will win because 155 is more than 150 points target.

After that math lesson please just tell me how I can win in DOMINATION?
Lets now get into a real example and see how we can do something to use the way the scores work and the common stalemate that develops to “unlock the log jam” and bring in a WIN ! Firstly it’s obvious that capturing the B flag is the key to winning DOMINATION. B flag is nearest to both A and C and so that’s why an enormous amount of game effort is placed on trying to “break the hill” and capture B flag.
You will in higher RANKED matches see wave after wave of battle around B flag and each crop of new spawned soldiers dying before they capture the hill. 1 soldier cannot capture it as it's so easy to shoot them, 2 is better and if you can get all 3 of your team on B you have a chance (as the time to capture reduces) but you also can get hit with a missile, war machine, grenade etc.
The reason on larger maps like meltdown, crossfire, standoff, summit etc that you want to capture B is because trying to hold both A and C (with a big gap between) means;
So practically we want to capture B flag and either A or C and not A and C flags. This means the strategic importance of B becomes crucial in the game. You will hear people like Godzly and iFerg speak about this legendary beast they term “map control” or “keeping spawns” and yet they never really explain what it means! I am happy to cover this in another post if this is received well, but for now, let's just look at how we can help avoid the futile attacks on B flag.
We will assume the following; “We are in a game of RANKED DOMINATION and its the Meltdown map. We have a nearly even score with your team on 85 and the enemy team just ahead on 98. Both teams have one flag each and the B flag is hotly contested and yet nobody has capped it yet.”
You have been playing your part as a loyal soldier as follows, I hope this will be recognized as I'm sure it will be most of you. You SPAWN at A flag site and run-up to the red boxes and go up through the window to the little cabin off B flag. You look carefully at B and its clear, you step onto it and BANG you get shot. Sometimes you shoot an enemy who is on B flag yourself and then you get shot. Either way you then re-spawn on A flag and start the cycle again, running up and RINSE REPEAT.
As you repeat this cycle, you think you came to play mobile games for fun and not to spend all your time running halfway across a map - anyway I know I do this! The competitive drive, voice prompts, the urgency of battle all makes your good tactics and intentions to pre-aim and so forth go out of the window. You just keep running up, doing your best and being shot dead for your troubles, and sometimes if you are a little late the enemy captures B and you lose! Luckily for you, the enemy is also involved in the same mad running cycle and is also trying to capture B or at least keep you the enemy off it.
Now for my big strategy; It seems clear that by running and being shot, you are not really contributing that full 1/5 I spoke about earlier to the game ? There’s a lot of people who are all sweaty and focused on B and trying to capture it and also preventing you from capturing it.

“Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face” – Mighty Mike Tyson
Now tactics mean that you need to find a method for swinging the tide of the battle in your team's favor and win the B flag. You could do this by actually capturing the B flag, but assuming that’s not working there are other ways to do it. In fact, if you watch professional “scrims” you see them do this all the time, they find a way to slow the opposite team down and delays say 3 of the soldiers reaching B flag. It only needs maybe 4 seconds of 3 enemies to b delayed and this allows enough of a “window” for your team to take advantage and capture B. Once captured it’s much easier to hold onto B flag and make sure the enemy doesn’t win it back whilst your team clock up double points.
So you are now bought into this as an idea right, but how do we achieve this ? Well often we see in games people who are able to use tactics to make this “break” or “gap” in the play. Now iFerg will use his “magic map control”, others hideout above B and snipe, some use grenades, some use a war machine, stealth helicopter, hives etc. Let’s assume for this example that none of these offensive weapons are accessible or part of your normal equipment. My method instead uses a “sneaky” tactic to “sew confusion” in the enemy ranks and to buy just enough time for your team to capture B.
Do as follows; You will need to run fast and so ideally you will have a “speed boost” AR-enabled in your weapon slot. Switch out to a grenade, pistol or knife so you can run very quickly. Now run from A spawn flag along to the right beside the hotel, then go up the stairs to right into the pillared dome reactor building. You keep running all through the pillars area (where nobody ever is on DOMINATION in meltdown), then out and through the loading bay with pallets and forklifts. Keep running on through the reactor itself to get to the enemy C spawn flag.
Once there slow down and switch to your Assault Rifle and get ready to just hop briefly on the enemy C flag for about 2 or 3 seconds. When you do this, quickly jump off and hide behind some cover and be ready. What happens is the enemy who is running to B turn around and head back to C as they can hear someone is taking their BASE Flag. As they run back they will be easy pickings for you as you lie in wait.
In doing this you want to try and avoid taking C itself, at first this may seem wrong but trust me if you actually take C and don’t just delay them you can end up flipping your own spawn. Remember the whole point of this tactic is to delay the 3 enemies going to B and hence allowing your team to win B flag. I sometimes also flip a smoke grenade in for fun and to add to the confusion.
I hope this all makes sense, I have often used this approach to “turn the tide of battle” and then seen my team capture B flag and we win the game. It is often clear that you are not adding much value as “cannon fodder” to keep trying and failing to take B.

Anyway, what did I do to climb out of the rut and start climbing again?
Back to my way of getting a real lasting improvement made to my game skills. I had decided to go full “pro” and invest time and effort in re-training (where you actually get a lot worse before you improve). I would master the way of using finger claw-like iFerg, Bobby Plays and Godly do – if it works for them then there’s no reason it shouldn’t work for me.
I looked at Godzly, iFerg and Bobby Plays to see precisely how they set up their HUD so I could simply copy it. I noticed that they all do it slightly differently and so I had to try and merge the best from all of them together which I did.
I know that these experts are all able to get superb results using these HUD setups, so my idea was simply that I can copy the precise same settings and learn how to use the setup and achieve similar results. If I have to “relearn” the screen and its layout then I may as well do something that’s lasting as I never want to relearn again. I used the precise same approach for the classes and settings, I copied these too.

“It’s the HUD Stupid !”
The 3 HUDs used by the list of Youtube pro’s; Godzly, iFerg and Booby Plays all have the buttons in different places. The layout I use is the following one and is logical and I used the best from each HUD I copied.

My HUD layout for anyone who wants to see how it looks

As you can see in the above picture I have all of my movement on the left-hand side and all of the offensive and shooting activity on the right. For me, this made it easier in my brain to be thinking left and right about moving or shooting and avoid being muddled. I have the thumb to left on the joystick button, then the index and middle finger for leap and crouch/slide.
On the right side I have a thumb again for looking around directionally and then scope in button (ADS) and the fire and knife together (this really helps in close quarters as you try desperately to shoot them you can actually knife them).
It makes perfect sense when you are playing the game to have the different sides of your brain thinking about the different actions as you run around. So rather than mixing jump on left and slide on right – they are both on the left along with movement and that helps things flow. It did take me at least a day to start to get good again with the changes and a week to be proficient – but it was incredibly worthwhile as the data shows. The picture below tells the story as it shows the graph for my cumulative points within the RANKED game. You can see that suddenly from game 29 in the sequence I started to massively improve and the overall points rocketed.

the entire graph showing my flat period and then huge rise to better RANKS after changing my setup and layouts and learning 6 finger claw

I can now use the new HUD to do things such as jump through a window, slide, and shoot sideways at the same time. The right side of the screen has all of my OFFENSIVE and FIRING related things. This allows me to think about shooting and killing from one side again and I avoid muddling the sides up.
The other thing I did along with altering the HUD was I changed my settings as well, here those are for anyone interested;

My basics for sensitivity
I also copied the classes they used, again using the best examples and including the meta for Season 4 of RANKED as follows:

Places to get some more tips
I then also took in some expert tips that I found here: https://www.reddit.com/CallOfDutyMobile/comments/fs6zuv/some_tips_from_a_noob_who_just_got_to_legendary/
There is also this guide to hardpoint that’s very helpful also;
https://www.reddit.com/CallOfDutyMobile/comments/fsae35/how_to_play_hardpoint_a_guide_by_a_noob/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x
It was these very helpful articles that inspired me to share with you all what I found on this journey to the “higher levels”.

“Big Tips for Big Plays!”
Now for a few general tops along with tactics, change your HUD, sort out settings, and learn the game mechanics. One thing I started to do and I have found this extremely useful, not just did it allow me to properly track my progress but also avoid fooling myself about my own abilities and that of my teammates in RANKED. I started to record ALL of my RANKED games, with the following info:
As you record your games in ranked you will start as I did to see patterns, you will see which maps you do well on and which game modes you are less good with. What you can then do is as I did for example go and play public HARDPOINT games for a few days to get better and learn the maps and HP locations. Trust me this really, really helps you.
If you record that not only can you create your own graph to convolve yourself that you are indeed making progress and the effort has been worth it you can also predict ho may more games you will need to play to reach a certain RANK as well. Added to this it's also very helpful, because the in-game records only;last for a week per the last 50 games whichever is less. So you cannot go back and track your stats properly. In fact a tip on that as well – I now always screenshot my settings, my HUD and classes so I don’t lose the god ones because sometimes in messing with things you mess them up and it's great to have a backup.

Final Set of Tips & Ideas
Now for a few “quick tips” generally on what to do and what not to do;
  1. Always use a trophy system – in DOM and HP they are invaluable and will protect you from so,any deaths. Because they take ages for you to throw them down they are unpopular, however so persevere because this is ONE OF THE EASIEST TIPS to achieve quick improvements. Indeed I go as far as to say they are essential kit for higher RANKED game levels.
  2. Don’t keep swapping around your guns and chop and change to see if like me you can find that “perfect gun”. This prevents you from learning a weapon inside out and being super proficient with that weapon and rely on it in all cases. It’s OK for Godzly or Noah to be always trying new setups and that’s helpful to those of use who watch the videos, however, we are not them and we tend to suck with guns that are new ! The key to success in RANKED CODM is consistency and that is above all KING. If you have to like me try and experiment then reserve JUST ONE class for these tests so you keep 4 classes the same and you can always rely on them when you need them.
  3. Really learn and understand the basics of proper game mechanics - how far behind can you be in DOM score-wise and will win ? How do you control, spawns, and map positions? where is cover and how do you use it ? when to push and when not? Learn the mental arithmetic I suggested about when you can win with one less flag and when you HAVE to push. Really immerse yourself in how the games are worn actually and then how you adopt that.
  4. In Hardpoint you must ALWAYS use a trophy system in the HARDPOINT as enemies will throw all they have at you to dislodge you. Also ALWAYS rotate early so you are setup and ready in the new HARPOINT – I rotate at 20 seconds and leave a comrade behind for the last few points. Some places take 20 seconds to get to them and so you want to be there from the start to get points. Even if the enemy arrives after 10 seconds you still have another 10 points for free in the bag and if you do this for 5 HARDPOINTs that’s 50 points ! Save your war machine and specialist for busting an enemy out of a HARDPOINT if they don’t use trophy (most don’t unless they now read this !!) you can clear an HP for reset in one shot.
  5. In TDM just TAKE IT REALLY SLOW . A simple but effective win strategy is this; just run from cover point to cover point. Stop at cover and then ADS in, look around and count to 3 and then move on and do the same. I know this sounds lame, people will say to me that you should be pushing up and so forth, but I find this simple approach works well as you allow enemies to come to you as you are behind cover and ADS in.
  6. I find S&D very hard as I cannot use a sniper well. My suggestion is to keep with the group. Also learn a few set areas and stick to them for example; run from B sight on spawn at Crash to building A sight. Do this with a grenade. If you move fast you beat the enemy and you jog up the stairs and get ready to defend. Works well. These sort of little set-pieces help me get through what are hard games.

My Final Summary
I do hope this has helped at ; least some people to get a better understanding of some things that helped me and worked and I have provided the proof that they did with the graph.
It’s very hard to get good advice that’s written down and you can then follow for yourself. There are many, many streams with very good players who are doing things that are SOOO good that what works for them but we cannot do the same things.
If this is received well, then I will consider doing a series on this like I did above with the tactics for breaking a fag in DOMINATION when you get stuck, if this sounds helpful to you then please UPVOTE me and anyway let me know your feedback.
all the best, GG's and signing off now from .....

Unraid Server build for Plex, Management, Gaming, Sim Racing, and VR

I thought I would create this post just in case anyone else was considering a similar build and looking for a point of reference, as I searched all over everywhere and couldn't really find any reference builds (outside of LTT) that successfully built a machine for this without spending a complete fortune.
My goal was pretty simple. I owned an Alienware 13R3 with a graphics amplifier and a GTX1080 in it. I also had an older pc build that was using ~110W+ that was running unraid and holding my 20TB+ (6TB Parity and a mix of 6 other 4TB/6TB drives + 1 250GB Samsung SSD cache drive). I also have an Oculus Rift with 3 sensors, and a Sim Racing seat with a Logitech G29 attached to it that I use for playing F1.
Also for reference, my unraid server runs Plex for streaming inside our family (Apple TVs, iPads and Phones), some file management dockers, and some other dockers that we use to help automate stuff for work.
The single biggest thing I was hoping to accomplish is merging all of this under a single box that was 100% capable of running the Racing and VR (Oculus) with no lag, and I was also looking for a big standby power reduction as power in New England is really pricey!

Hardware I used (some bought new, some repurposed):
This allowed me to have all of the hardware I needed to give the VM its own USB ports and have plenty of Sata ports for the internal drives. I did buy a 2 Molex -> Sata power connectors as I didn't have quite enough sata power connections from the power supply as the cpu cooler, usb card, and the case each needed a sata power connection.
I ended up going intel for Quicksync compatibility, and a few other components I got (like the wifi MB) I simply got because they were on sale cheaper, and it didn't bother me if I had some extra features I wasn't going to use.
Tweaks I needed to do during the initial build:
Tweaks I needed to do in unraid:
Setting up the Gaming VM:
I still haven't gotten around to fully trying to set up quicksync acceleration yet in Plex, but everything is really working far better than I expected.

Since I've already built the system, I wasn't really looking for feedback. I just wanted to put this together as I REALLY stressed out a lot over this build, and spent around 2 months fretting over which parts to buy and if I should just give up and make 2 separate builds. I also ran into some big hiccups with settings that while the fixes were ultimately just change something here or there, looked like they might be dealbreakers at first (aka Q35 machines are nearly unusable with this hardware combination and lag massively no matter what you do).
So I hope if there are people browsing through reddit and considering doing something like this they can use this as at least a reference point of a good working build that is capable of doing everything in Unraid + VR Gaming!
Edit: Should have been Raid-1
Edit 2: I actually got QuickSync running today and completely overthought it on Unraid 6.8.2. All I needed to do was add an extra device to the Linuxserver Plex Docker that mapped /dev/dri:/dev/dri. I did need to add the line modprobe i915 to the go file. Just checked and all our transcodes to our phones now have the (hw) next to them when streaming and the CPU isn't doing any processing at all now!
Edit 3: So I had some issues running the 3rd oculus rift sensor, where it would show bad tracking and lose sensors. So I added the Inateck PCI-e to USB 3.0 (KT4001) card linked on the oculus website and added another monoprice Molex -> Sata connector to power it. Connected it to the VM in unraid and then let windows install the stock windows drivers, not the manufacturer ones. This solved all of my issues with the Rift. My connection setup is I plug the 3 cameras into the Inateck card, and then I plug the rift into the GTX 1080 and the Rift USB into the ASMedia card. Have played a wide variety of games now and haven't had any more sensor disconnect issues!

Final Edit:
So I made a few additional changes to this build that I thought I'd post about now that they are all done and how I am currently running things in case anyone stumbles on this.
And that's basically the end of this build! :D I'm not seeing IRQ errors anymore, and everything is up and running normally now. I've slowly turned everything back on and now have my dockers and vms up again!

One Device for Work and Play: A Working Samsung Dex Review

One Device for Work and Play: A Working Samsung Dex Review
With the release of the Galaxy Note10 and DeX on Windows, I decided to venture off on a real-world DeX experiment. I've read a lot of articles and watched a lot of talking-head video "reviews" on YouTube, but it's always focused around casual computing. As a consultant in technology, I travel frequently and sometimes far. Because of this, I am a proponent of the one-device vision. My ideal future vision is to effectively be able to work from my phone without needing to manage or work in multiple environments a long the way. DeX gets us close to this. Read below for my experiences, thoughts, issues, and impressions along my journey of using my Note 10+ for everything in my day-to-day life.
I'm going to structure this by use case, as I threw a lot at thie environment.
WARNING - Long post is long. Grab a coffee, tea, blanket and pillow and sit by the fire. Or just skip to the conclusion (but you'd be missing out on all the juicy details).

2. Working with Devices
This section is dedicated to my experiences with various external devices used in the DeX environment for my use cases. Rather than mix use case notes with hardware notes, I separated them out into different sections.

2.1 Monitors
DeX's maximum supported resolution is 3440x1440. This will give you the most real estate to work with. I also had a Samsung CHG90 (3840x1080) monitor at my disposal for testing, but the max resolution I could get on that was 2560x1080. It appears the resolutions shown in the DeX settings menu are the only resolutions supported.
With the VioTek (which is a GREAT monitor for $400 dollars), connection was flawless and consistent over HDMI. You'll notice in the photo above, that I mount a sound bar below my monitor. That is fed by a single 1/8" stereo cable. HDMI audio output to the monitor from the phone works perfectly.

2.2 Keyboards
Bluetooth keyboards have been supported for quite some time on Android. I use the K810 for traveling because I got a great deal on it and love the typing feel. There are much, much cheaper keyboards that you can use. Additionally, USB keyboards are supported. I tested this with the K780, and a unifying receiver. Adding a mouse to the unifying receiver worked as well.
Interestingly, there seems to be a couple issues with using bluetooth keyboards in DeX. It works as expected about 90% of the time.
  • Multiple Keystrokes - Every so often, keys will triple input. For instance, typing the word "TEST" will show up on the screen as "TTTEEESSSTTT". When this occurs, it can range from less than a second to 10 seconds. I can't find a way to fix or correct this issue short of disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard or wait for it to correct itself. It's incredibly annoying because backspace and deletes are also tripled.
  • Typing Backwards - This is an interesting one. Every so often, keys will register on the screen input in reverse. For instance, if I'm entering my username on a text field "mister2forme", it will show up in the field as "emrof2retsim". Reconnecting the keyboard doesn't fix this issue, but clicking around or to a different tab/window can sometimes correct it. It can also fix itself after some time.
Both of these issues appear to ONLY affect bluetooth keyboards. When testing my K780 on a USB receiver, I never ran into these issues. As mentioned, it works fine about 90% of the time.

2.3 Mice
They operate as expected with the exception of scroll wheel support. Some apps support the scroll wheel with fluid scrolling. Some "support" it, but jump around almost as much as a page down/page up. Some don't support it and require clicking & dragging. I'll see if I can assemble a small table of apps to show which support it and which don't.

2.4 Storage
We already know that the internal SD card slot works fine. This section covers USB drives, external card readers, and NAS drives.
  • USB Thumb/Hard Drives - I used my docking station to connect to whichever DeX hub I was using. Thumb drives showed up in the native Samsung file explorer and interacted just fine. My 4TB external drive would not show up in the Samsung file app, but did show up in Total Commander. it appears that some drives may require additional granting of write access, but will not show up in the dialog to select for access provisioning. I haven't found a solution for this, but will spend some time playing around.
  • External Card Readers - The SD and XQD card readers I tested worked fine. Additionally, as you'll see in my photography use case, hooking up a camera directly as a card reader also works.
  • NAS Drives - I use an SMB share on my personal NAS. The native Samsung file explorer doesn't support NAS or SMB connections. Total Commander has a plug-in that works for this. One minor annoyance is that Total Commander doesn't appear to persist mapped network drives between instances - requiring me to enter the IP, UserName, and Password every time I want to connect after disconnecting from DeX.
  • Cloud Drives - OneDrive, Samsung Cloud, and Google Drive all work fine within the default file explorer.

2.4 Hubs
I've used a plethora of ways to connect with DeX (links under Setup section). Each is outlined below:

Connection By Resolutions Pros Cons
Samsung Station All * All resolutions supported * Props the phone up for easy fingerprint access * Integrated fan for cooling * Ethernet jack * Spaces the ports out * Can open up to 20 windows in DeX * Larger than the others * Limited support for cases * Expensive * Requires power to be connected
Samsung Pad All * All resolutions supported * Can use phone as mouse trackpad * Integrated fan for cooling * Can open up to 20 windows in DeX * Compatible with slightly thicker cases * Flat alignment doesn't allow for video features (video calling, etc) * Fan is audible (not loud, but audible) * Aligning port requires attention * More expensive than non-Samsung options * Requires power to be connected * Port access is tight/inconvenient
USB-C Dongle All (3440x1440 limited to 50hz) * All resolutions supported (some at lower hz) * Can use without power connected * Very portable * Port access is convenient * Cheap * Lower refresh rate for higher resolution * Very light - might not lay flat with a stiffer HDMI cable
Docking Station Only 16:9 resolutions * Most ports available * Powered USB * One solution for all your devices * No higher resolutions supported * Not as portable * Can be expensive depending on model
USB-C to HDMI Cable 1600x900 or 1920x1080 * Most portable - it's just a cable * Cheapest option * No USB ports * Limited resolution support * Won't charge the phone

It's important to note that resolution support is finnicky on phones. By comparison, the Tab S4 will support more resolutions on non-Samsung solutions. Also to note, not all USB-C dongles support all resolutions. Most report limited to 1080p max resolution. The USB-C dongle I used for testing was recommended by another user here as working on higher resolutions, and it does, just at 50hz instead of 60hz.

3. Use Cases
Rather than go through the normal structure of a review, I decided to tackle this from a use case perspective. This is meant to provide context and comparison points for some of the things I threw at this solution.

3.1 Casual Computing
WHAT I USE:
DeX can handle most, if not all casual computing needs. Want to check your email? Done. Want to update Facebook? No problem. Want to manage your budget in Excel, sure! That's been covered in a lot of different reviews. What I'll cover here are the applications I used in my day-to-day and my experience.
  • Web Browsers - Chrome, Edge, Samsung, Desktop Browser - Most browsers work fine, but there doesn't seem to be a single "kick-ass" browser.
    • Chrome has great tab management (and surprisingly doesn't eat RAM), but requires all new tabs to be set to desktop manually. One hugely annoying thing about Chrome? It doesn't let you click and copy the current tab address. Also, when you go to click share > Copy to Clipboard, it won't register the click on Share, and just treats it as a web page click.
    • Edge is mostly great, but not all web sites appear to work correctly.
    • Samsung works good, but all tabs are the same size and can only fit a handful across the screen - forcing you to manually curate once you open more than 5 tabs.
    • Desktop Browser is pretty configurable - allowing you to set what platform/browser is reported to the site, but has similar random site issues much like Edge.
  • Home Management - EcoBee, EverSource, Google Home, SmartThings, SolarEdge, BlueIris, iRobot, Xfinity - All apps used to manage various systems/services for my home
    • I won't break down each one. Most are designed for cell phone use, so may require some window sizing to get proper proportions on the screen, but interaction and operation of all of them work fine in DeX.
    • A note on BlueIris - They have an app, and it works fine, but I prefer the web application that comes with the BlueIris server installation. It is simpler, and scales better than the app.
  • Shopping - Amazon, Best Buy, etc. - While each vendor has it's own mobile app, I recommend using the browser much like on a desktop/laptop. Most of the apps don't offer the best DeX experience, and the web sites typically are more full-featured.
  • Other Random Apps - AmazFit, Google Fit, Mint, HD HomeRun, Plex, TuneIn Radio, YouTube
    • Same as above, some are designed for phone aspect ratio, but operate fine.
    • Some have scaled tablet modes and they switch automatically. I tend to run radio/youtube/TV in the background while doing work - DeX handles this fine.
      • A note on YouTube - Leave YouTube in window mode (don't maximize). if you're multitasking If you maximize, as soon as the window loses focus, it will stop playing. If you're watching a video and multitasking, this isn't an issue as it wouldn't be maximized anyway.

3.2 Work
So a little context here. I own/manage an IT and Business Architecture firm. In addition to managing the business, I also take on project work/clients. I travel a lot, and spent quite a bit of time using DeX on Windows. The nature of my work requires a fast workflow at times. As part of my workflow, I would touch up to 30 different apps daily. I'll organize into different aspects of my workflow.
  • Email - I really like the new changes to the Outlook app, but ultimately use the built in Samsung Email app. My reason is a very specific feature. Both apps support customizing swipe actions on the app. I right set to mark read, and left set to delete. I get a TON of emails per day and like to be able to quickly curate and organize them.
    • The reason I use Samsungs Email is because it offers Mark as Read, Delete, and Reply from the notification pull down. Outlook only allows Archive, Delete, and Reply and no way to change them.
    • One additional note, Samsung Email allows for rich text in the signature fields. This is critical as my client mailboxes typically require formatting. I'm astounded the Outlook app doesn't allow this.
  • Email - I've moved over to Nine email. Link to the app on the play store is here. This app does everything that the Samsung Email app does - full swipe/notification action customization, rich signature support, combined account views.
    • It also has a pretty useful Calendar function (much more like Outlook on desktop than Outlook on Android).
    • It has a toolbar and you can customize it.
    • Visiting the developer's website, they mention DeX support specifically. This means that they are developing with DeX in mind. I'm going to reach out and offer to help them with features/testing. I'll let everyone know if I'm successful.
  • Office Apps - The Note 10/+ comes with a Microsoft Office app, which is basically a combination portal for their individual office apps. The advantage here, is support for multiple docs at once. With the individual apps, you can only view one file at a time. This makes it hard when you're trying to open 2 word docs at a time. Additionally, WPS Office is free and offers multi-doc support as well, but font packs are where they charge you.
    • One thing missing from Android all together is Visio. As an architect, I spend inordinate amounts of time in Visio, and not having that software available is a glaring hole in the Samsung/Microsoft partnership. I'm sure this is for licensing. LucidChart is a decent alternative, but doesn't work with mouse input - a must for this use case. I've reached out to LucidChart and confirmed they have no support for mouse input. I submitted a feature request, FWIW.
    • To overcome the Visio, I broke the DeX-only rule and set up a remote node with Win10 installed on my home network. This is the little A300 you see on the desk. I only remoted into that environment for Visio use. I did this both with TeamViewer and a compination of OpenVPN and Remote Desktop.
  • Note Taking - OneNote - For note taking, I use OneNote. It automatically syncs with the cloud and across all my devices. The mobile app is ... OK. It needs some work.
    • It seems to apply mouse scroll wheels across all panes (Notebook, Section, Page, Notes) without any way to just scroll a specfic pane. If I select a section and scroll down, it will scroll through then immediiate scroll through the rest of the panes into the notes.
  • Conferencing/Video Conferencing - WebEx, Zoom, Teams, Skype - All apps worked fine in DeX. Important to note - DeX on Windows doesn't use the laptop webcam for video. There are mounts out there to attach the phone to the screen, but I just use a little phone stand. This doesn't work on the plane or train, but I wouldn't take a video call from those.
    • NOTE - One nice side effect of this is the quality of the cameras on phones is VASTLY, and I mean VASTLY superior to that of laptops. People loved how clear and high-resolution my feed was.
  • Client Access Apps - Citrix, Remote Desktop, TeamViewer - All apps work as designed. Citrix appears to be the most flexible. It can resize the desktop window and auto adjusts the resolution. Remote desktop forces full window use. TeamViewer has limited resolution support. From a performance perspective Remote Desktop is slightly better than the other two. TeamViewer appeared to handle the changes in data speed on LTE better than Remote Desktop, but Remote Desktop provided a more native like experience.
    • I've transitioned to AnyDesk because of random issues with TeamViewer dropping my hosts (requiring them to be re-added).
  • Network Connections - F5 VPN, OpenVPN - F5 required some finagling, but I think that was more the client's setup than DeX or the app. OpenVPN was used to remote into my home network and worked flawlessly.
  • Business Management/Travel - QuickBooks, Amex, Marriott, Hertz, Orbitz, Uber, DriveSync, Toggl, TSheets
    • Much like above, apps that have equivalent websites, are almost always better to use on the website. The Apps will work, but the websites offer the most comprehensive experience in DeX.
    • Quickbooks - This works surprisingly well. Things are organized slightly differently, but by and large most of the data is accessible. I was impressed.
    • DriveSync - This is a nifty little app that allows me to cache local copies of my Google Drive, and will synchronize changes up to the cloud. This is ideal because I don't lose access to the artifacts I may be working on while traveling, and I can seamlessly move from phone to tablet to laptop with all my files synchronized.
One awesome benefit of this approach, is the use of my native LTE data in the phone. I have an "unlimited" plan, and have found that native phone LTE connections are faster & more reliable than wifi hotspot devices. In addition, hotspots are very limited on data allowance, and utilizing unlimited phone data would save me about 40$ a month by replacing my hotspot, alone.
Data Backup/Redundancy Strategy
For work, I use a couple different strategies for backup and synchronization across my devices (Laptop, Phone, Tablet). For each, I section off a local workspace and synchronize a OneDrive or Google Drive folder. This ultimately depends on which client I'm working on. Both synchronize great. For Google Drive, I highly recommend the DriveSync app. It will perform real time syncing and change analysis.
For managing the filing aspect of the businesss (I scan all documents to a filing system), I've got a mirror pool setup on FreeNAS. The files are scanned directly to the pool and accessed over an SMB share to all my devices. For backup and external sharing, this pool is synchronized automatically with a cloud service.
Note - Highly recommend DeX Hub app. It adds a real start menu (see above photos) and a bunch of useful keyboard shortcuts. Not all the shortcuts worked in all apps (like zooming), but useful overall.
Average Temperature Range Reported - 42\ - 68* C*

3.4 Photography
In addition to IT, I also do photography as a side gig and hobby. I shoot a Nikon Z7 - which is important to note because of file size, and memory card handling. For those who don't know, the Z7 shoots 47MP files in 14-bit uncompressed RAW. A typical file size can easily top 100MB per photo. To compound this, the camera only has a single card slot. So how does this all relate to DeX? Let me explain a simple, typical flow:
  1. Take photos
  2. Field backup photos to phone
  3. Get back to desk (or laptop)
  4. Process photos
  5. Publish photos to client (or personal library on the NAS)
I'm able to use a USB-C cable and directly import all the files from an XQD card in the camera to the phone in the Lightroom App. Transfers are very quick over the USB-C connection. Once in DeX mode, the Lightroom App is surprisingly featured. Does it have ALL the capabilities of the desktop version, no, not at all. Does it provide enough for a field edit? Absolutely. Within DeX it performs great, as well. I'd even swear it was faster than my hexacore Intel machine that I currently use for my main Lightroom work. Publishing works just as well as on the desktop (mostly web based).
There are a couple things holding this back from being even better.
  • No device support for color correction - DeX doesn't have the ability to apply color profiles for monitors. This is a must for photographers. If you're using a Tab S4/S5e/S6, you have more control over the color reproduction on the built in screen, and I would recommend using that as much as possible. It's still not comprehensive or featured enough for a true photography workflow. I always HW calibrate my monitors as much as possible, but still usually need a color profile in Windows.
  • No support for LoupeDeck or Wacom input - LoupeDeck requires a driver and translation application for use in Windows, so I didn't expect it to work in DeX at all. It doesn't. Same with the Wacom pad, however if you're on a tablet, it might not even be necessary. The pen on my Tab S4 works great and is almost as precise as the desktop version I use.
Data Backup/Redundancy Strategy
I eluded to this above, but I'll expand upon it a bit. After backing up/pre-processing the photos on my device, I synchronize with my Lightroom catalog on my main machine. This catalog is local to the machine, but photos live on a separate FreeNAS pool (mirrored). I can access the files directly on my devices and perform periodic cold storage backups to a USB drive for further redundancy.
Average CPU Temperature Range Reported - 35\ - 62* C*

3.4 Traveling
This can be a subset of work, but I wanted to focus on the traveling experience specifically. For this, I used the CHUWI laptop noted above and DeX on Windows. I also speak to my HP Lapdock experiences, but ultimately didn't field test because it failed at basic bench testing.
There's something to be said about the ability to work at your desk, grab your phone and continue in an Uber, then pull out a thin client on a train and work like a laptop all within the same environment. No file syncing, no re-finding a website or synchronizing bookmarks, immediate access to photos/files, etc. To me, the realization to a streamlined, work-anywhere device is particularly attractive and has definitely provided a benefit to the services I offer.

DeX on Windows vs Lapdock
DeX on Windows - This is going to be an unpopular opinion. There's a lot of negativity in this SubReddit around DeX on Windows. For me, it runs great. I connect the phone, scan my thumbprint, and DeX loads in about 15 seconds. The only difference in experience, is apparently the refresh rate (seems to run at 1080p30). Because of the reduced refresh, some people interpret that as "lag". It's not lag - inputs and responses are similar to that of a straight monitor connection. Videos run fine, the trackpad operates as it should (right and left click, tapping, clicking), sound is output through the laptop speakers, and there's no noticeable performance impact on the processing side.
HP Lapdock - Another unpopular opinion. I had a Lapdock and ultimately got rid of it. It wouldn't work with my S10e at all, worked ok with my Tab S4 (but then why use it at all?), and only worked about 25% the time with the Note 10+. When it did "work", it usually required a connection dance to get up and running, and even then had limited mouse support and no sound (yes, I tried playing something while connecting). I had the right version of the Lapdock, too. This would have failed spectactularly if I tried to use it in the field and got stuck using the pen and screen. DeX on Windows is a much better option - You can pick up a laptop that's cheaper than the LapDock and have full fledged, consistent operation.
Edit: A number of people are reporting subpar resolution and refresh on DoW. I believe I've narrowed this down to cable quality. When using an old USB C cable, I was able to replicate some of the reported issues. I recommend using speed certified cables that support Alternative DisplayPort. I've added a link to the specific cables I used above.

DeX on Windows vs Portable Monitor Setup
I have a USB-C monitor and ultimately decided to move to a laptop with DoW for a few reasons:
* Everything is contained in one device, keyboard, trackpad, display, battery
* I can't really setup on a plane or train to work with an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, and USB hub.
* Battery life on the device goes down quite a bit when needing to power a monitor.
* Perfectly usable and highly portable laptops can be had for cheaper than a battery backed USB monitor. Assuming both are new.
* If the DeX environment fails for whatever reason, you can always use a laptop in a pinch.

Additional DeX on Windows Information
I've done some digging into the technical installation/configuration of DeX on Windows to see if we can tweak or modify the installation for better performance. See the edits at the bottom of this post for a link to that post. Definitely check that post out because there are some potential configuration elements that might help people who are having issues.
For this post, I'll say that DoW successfully mirrors my laptops screen resolution (1920x1080) and using FRAPS confirmed that it is operating at 30 FPS. Because DoW hides resolution selection, you can test your resolution by using a web page such as this.
It appears as though the refresh rate is software capped at 30fps.
Battery
I'm very sensitive to battery management on my devices - even more so on a Note series. I don't like to peg the device at 100% for extended periods of time and prefer to keep the device between 30% and 85% on average. When using DoW, the phone will always charge. Since I work hours at a time, I turned off Fast Charging and chose to connect over a USB-A cable as opposed to a USB-C cable. The C cable will charge faster than the A.
This serves two purposes - One, the Note will charge much slower and prevent extra battery wear. Two, this will drain the laptop battery less - a key component to being mobile. When at my desktop, I used the dongle the most as it allowed me to run off the phone battery rather than constantly charging.
Some metrics below:
Setup Charge/Drain Rate Charge/Drain Time
Hub - 25W Charger - FC on (C) 1.15%/minute (C) 1 hour 25 minutes - 2%-100%
Hub - 25W Charger - FC off (C) 0.75%/minute (C) 2 hours 5 minutes - 6%-100%
Laptop - USB-C - FC on (C) 0.94%/minute (C) 1 hour 5 minutes - 39%-100%
Laptop - USB C - FC off (C) 0.60%/minute (C) 1 hour 20 minutes - 52%-100%
Laptop - USB A - FC off (C) 0.09%/minute (C) 1 hour 15 minutes - 65%-72%
Hub - No Charging (D) 0.25%/minute (D) 6 hours 14 minutes - 100%-15%
As mentioned above, this will drain your laptop battery. The laptop I used advertises a battery life of about 8 hours, and this is mostly correct with casual computing (I came in just shy in my rundown test). While using DeX on a Type C cable, the laptop started asking for charge around 5-5.5 hrs. With the Type-A, it stretched to about 6-6.5. Some of this was brightness, because of the varying environments I was in.
Average CPU Temperature Range Reported - 34\ - 63* C*

3.5 Gaming
ETA Prime did a more comprehensive test with gaming on DeX than I had time to. Controllers work, games work. The only thing to mention is not all games will allow resizing of the window. Some like to stick to a smaller fixed-size window . I think you can force resizing in Developer options, but I didn't spend much time there.
You can check out his video here.

4. Tablet DeX vs Phone DeX
The experience in DeX between my Tab S4 and Note 10+ is mostly identical in appearance/function. The tablet, however has a couple key advantages that I wish they would just enable on the phones. For reference I tested both Note 10+ and S10e phones.
  • Battery wear management - The TS4 has an option under advanced battery settings at the very bottom called "Protect Battery". If you toggle this and reboot, the tablet will report 100% as, and only charge the device to, 85% of the actual battery capacity. This is something I wish all battery devices offered and have only seen in a couple laptops. Effectively, this reduces the wear on your batteries over time by not allowing a constantly plugged in device to peg the battery at 100% charge capacity all the time.
  • All the resolutions, all the time - The TS4 will output at all its supported resolutions no matter which connection you use (as long as the monitor supports it). Those hubs listed above? It didn't matter if I used a Samsung branded dock or just a straight USB-C to HDMI cable - 3440x1440p popped right up. The same with my Cable Matters docking station.
  • 20 open windows, all the time - This appears to be tied to the same hub connection logic that enables all the resolutions. When you use a non-Samsung hub on a phone, you're likely to get a message that asks you to use one. It will still work, but your resolution support will be cut, and so will the allowed number of open windows (from 20 to 5). The TS4 never cut the number of allowed windows in DeX mode.
And now for disadvantages with the tablet:
  • There is a bug with iris scanning. It works, but if you have the tablet in a horizontal alignment (propped on a desk) and use DeX on the monitor and not the screen. It will attempt to scan your iris as if the tablet was vertical. Very annoying.
  • Video conferencing - Again, if the tablet is horizontal, and you're using DeX. When you load up any of the video conferencing apps, it will only show your camera as if the tablet was vertical. So you're sideways. I couldn't find any settings in the conferencing apps or camera that would rotate the feed appropriately.
One final note about tablets/DeX. I get what Samsung is trying to offer here. My main issues with the current execution are screen size and portable options. 10" is a great tablet screen size, but is just shy of acceptable for a device to replace a laptop. Also, iPads have options for clamshell cases that have a keyboard. You can snap the tablet in, and the case makes it act like a laptop with regards to screen tilt and ease of closing. Kudos for including a trackpad on the new TS6 keyboard "case", but as someone who's exhaustedly used the surface-style keyboard solutions (even on a surface, itself), it's not very functional for the intended use case. Airplane trays? Floppy-tippy time. Laps? Floppy-tippy time and good luck adjusting angle. The only scenario it really works well for is tables, and I very rarely pack one of those for my trips.
So yea, give me a 12.2 Tab S6+ with a clamshell case and I'm all over it.

5. General Notes
  • Battery life while using DeX without charging surprised me. It gets nearly the same screen-on time powering a monitor as it does with the phone itself. More surprising is that multitasking with numerous windows (I tested that 20 window limit quite a bit) didn't seem to impact the battery use much.
  • There is a learning curve. As much as the name implies, DeX doesn't offer a true 1:1 replication of a desktop experience. That's not necessarily a fault as Microsoft has groomed us into the user experience we've come to expect. My point is, there is a little bit of a learning curve. Things that are simple require some additional work (such as copying a file to a different folder). That's not to say it can't be done, but it's just not optimized yet and you'll have to learn how.
  • I love the one-device future. Handling texts, calls, and alerts in a unified environment for my work has been great.
  • Contrary to my prior thoughts that I've posted, DeX on Windows is a great addition. Being able to pick and choose the device you want to use as your mobile solution is a big improvement over trying to shoehorn a sorta-maybe solution like the Lapdock.
  • Sitting in a conference and watching another vendor

6. Opportunities for Improvement (Ranting time)
  • Better mouse translation/support - Some apps let you use a scroll wheel, some apps force you to left click and drag. It can be cumbersome when the wheel isn't allowed. Scroll wheel support in your giant app selection screen would be nice.
  • Zoom support - Google Maps is practically useless in DeX. You can search for a location, but can't zoom out.... only in.
  • Better focus handling - If I'm typing in a document, and a text message notification pops up, my document loses focus. Likewise, it doesn't appear to know how to refocus the last used window when one is closed. Also, the first keystroke in the start menu appears to set focus to the search bar - this is confusing, unnecessary.
  • Allow me to customize what icons are on the status bar - Seriously, Samsung. Your damn status bar takes up HALF a 1080p screen. I'd love to be able to toggle between more than 5 apps AND see my battery %.
  • Drop the huge tabs in Samsung Internet.
  • Offer a better "start" menu than your normal tablet app selection.
  • Clearing notifications appears to have a much smaller target than the X shown. I have to click the VERY center to get the notification to go.
  • Cut the crap with the resolution and number of windows supported. Give me all the windows and all the resolutions without having to buy your tablet or overpriced USB-C hub. Oh and before you claim your docks have fans for thermal management, I pegged your DeX system and my thermals were all well under SD855 spec without a fan.
  • Add Protect Battery to your phones. If you're promoting a desktop replacement environment, and your own docks require power to operate, give users the ability to protect their battery longevity. It's already in your tablets so you don't even have to write the software.
  • Offer a true file explorer. We shouldn't need to try TC or ES or some combination to get closer to real file management. Give use multiple windows, drag-n-drop, copy/paste without resorting to silly on screen buttons. How about a tool bar with some functions on it? Network drive support?
  • Tell MS to get off their asses and build a damn Visio app in Android. I don't care if their trying to protect that revenue stream. They can still make you pay for a license to use like with O365.
  • Widget support for the desktop would be nice.
  • Dynamic resolution handling. Rather than a menu of predefined resolutions, why not let users use all of their monitors supported resolutions? Oh, and no 4k... yea... add that.
  • Samsung - For the love of everything holy on every religion - FIX THE [shift] + [space]. There's no reason in 2019 that you cannot support a shift and space press at the same time.

7. Conclusion
Plopping this right after my rants section wasn't intentional but may seem contradictory. Ultimately, I think DeX is close to being a serious alternative. Once the learning curve was over, I was able to fully operate day-to-day, be it work, home, alien invasions. Some of my efforts even improved! I didn't need my main machine for anything in the past month aside from some video editing work (had a time crunch, and couldn't investigate alternatives in DeX). In fact, I'm going to continue using DeX as my main environment for the foreseeable future, or until work demands prohibit me from using it. I'll continue to update this post with discoveries/notes as I come across them.
I understand it's not for everyone. Some people are embedded in the environment of their choice. You will have to discover ways of doing things that seem natural on regular computers that will make you go "huh?". I definitely think it's worth a look. I used to think it could never fully replace a computer because of all the legacy or specialized applications written for Windows. However, I see a lot of companies moving to virtualized or cloud environments. Containerization of these applications in a docker instance or VM or even Citrix/DaaS would allow the same access to these applications from practically any end point (including DeX).
I'll close with an interesting story. While working at one of my clients (a level 3-4 bank), I was having a meeting with an SVP in the IT organization. At one point, he had asked me why I would always hook my phone up to my laptop (inquiring as to whether or not my battery was dying). I told him about how I was using it as my "unified computing device" (gotta sound smart, no?) and gave him a brief demo of DeX. He was blown away that not only could I seamlessly connect to their environment, but also at the transition between workstation and mobile. They were already considering switching their mobile devices over to Samsungs from iPhones (thank God!). if Samsung could take a small step back and really work with MS to polish the experience and tweak it, they'd have a case for corporate device endpoints AND mobilility customers. Not only would capital expenditure go down, but operational expenditure as well. It was a very neat conversation.
